How good is the FJ Cruiser in mud? (Pic inside)
#4
Here's what the FJ-62 driver, ClemsonCruiser on ih8mud, had to say:
VTcruiser and Myself were fortunate enough to be the TLCA support vehicles for the FJ Cruiser photo shoot at Gray Rock OHV park in Alabama. We spent two days wheeling all over Gray Rock with the new FJ, and I have to say I am highly impressed with the FJ's capability. We were in the muddest and slickest conditions I have ever wheeled in (2" of rain) and the FJ out performed my FJ62 which I consider to be fairly capable with 33's a lift and rear locker. The FJ wheeled as if it was locked front and rear, all I can say is traction control is an amazing thing , also the engine in the FJ was rather impressive too it had so much power, just what you needed to get the tires spinning fast enough to rip through the mud we were in in. I am ashamed to say I found myself stuck 4 times to the FJ's one . So I say to any of you guys worried about the capability of the FJ it is not an issue, it is ready for action. If you guys want pics check out this thread in the South Carolina Club section :http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=78842
These are the TRD wheels and BFG's available as PPO's

Edit: Photos relinked - Good Times

I think the main difference is the traction control, I wheeled with a 4th gen runner and was highly impressed at the ease with which he made it through stuff. A couple obstacles we heard a lot of banging and slamming and saw a lot of wheelspin...on everyone except the 4th gen, he walked right through it like nothing.
I am not sure how I feel about that though. I mean, you mod your truck, tires, gears, lockers, etc, but it is still basically about driving skill and picking the right lines, etc. Once traction control comes in, you hit the gas andlet the truck figure out how to get through the obstacle. Seems like it might be fun for a bit, but it would get old fast.

Good pics, way better than the "publicity shots" so far seen.
I had it almost out of my mind.
NOW you've gone and got me thinking about it again...

By the way, I was wondering regarding FJ performance. As far as I know it is build on 4Runner platform, just 10cm shorter frame. This should mean that it might have the same capabilities as 4th Gen. 4Runner. It has the same engine, front suspension and rear axle. I checked the dimensions, looks the same, except 10cm shorter base and approach/departure angles are better.
