97 t100 exhaust
I've gotta 1997 Toyota t100 3.4L im wanting to gut the catalytic converter to give it a ddeepdeep loud sound. But everyone keeps telling me if I do it will mess my motor up? If I gut it aand run pipes I thought it would be fine any ideas?

The catalytic converter really won't change the sound too much but changing the muffler and gutting the cat as well as a new axel back will definetly help out.
I recommend a cherrybomb glasspack muffler a high flow or even cat delete and that should give you a good deep sound out of the pipe if you want a deep induction noise I suggest a cold air intake
I have a 93 with a flowmaster stock cat and 3 inch tip and it sounds pretty deep I enjoy especially around 2k rpm

The reason people tell you it will hurt the motor is for two reasons.
First, gutting the cat will cause it to turn on the check engine light. No big deal, if you don't care. It's just the trucks way of saying your polluting, which, since your even contemplating gutting it, you obviously don't care about whether or not you pollute. If you live in a state that does emissions testing, this will also hurt you when you have to do a test. Chances are, you won't pass.
Second though, is that the cat provides some back pressure. An engine needs a little back pressure to run correctly. Removing it will actually hinder performance, and in extreme situations, cause issues like burnt valves.
I would recommend you try replacing just the muffler. Personally, I've got a 24" magnaflow race muffler on mine. Pretty deep, and loud.

if you're going to gut a perfectly good catalytic converter, that's just ridiculous.
Go to an exhaust shop. REMOVE the catalytic converter ( do not cut the flanges off it ) and keep it for resale. People don't always want an obnoxious exhaust, so itll assist in your resale value.
Once its removed, 2.25 piping into a muffler of your choice and itll sound fine. Try not to get a chambered muffler on a decatted 3.4. Itll sound tingy and lose the natural throatiness of the 3.4

I've seen and heard all sorts of mufflers on 3.4s. Mak is right on the flowmaster. They have a tendency to sound really tinny, or metallic, and generally bad. I've also had thorleys, borlas and cherry bombs on past toyotas and seen them on friends. Personally, I think the magnaflow sounds the best. Mild, not too tinny, and it brings out the low grumble, especially on a S/c'd 3.4 like mine and my brothers. My little brother has a magnaflow chambered like the one below on his 3.4 Tacoma. Personally, I'm planning on changing over to one like his. I've grown up a little bit since I put that muffler on, and now I think it's too loud. I have a 9 month old son that I can wake up by going hitting wide open throttle with him in the back seat.

Laugh at me if you will but for 300 bucks I got a rock auto bosal cat and cat back. Cat sounds slightly tinny but not bad but the muffler sounds deep and nice. Its basically a stock type part. Quality was excellent

Actually CJM, Borsal is who makes the TRD cat back kits for the newer toyotas. I love the sound of the new 5.7 tundras. They went with a true dual exhaust that really stepped it up compared to their old design, which used a dual in-dual out design.

Hello Everyone and thank you for your help in advance…
I have this truck and the catalytic converter was cut off and replaced with pipe and the muffler is entirely rotted out as well as the latter half of the pipe. It is very loud in the weld job on the catalytic replacement was crap so it smells like exhaust in the cab all the time. With worry about lack of back pressure, my first Question is,
1.Can a person replace the catalectic area of the exhaust with say a smaller size pipe (from 2.25 to say 1.75-2) to create some pressure? So the exhaust from manifold to catalytic to muffler would look like this (Legend):
:: manifold
= pipe
~smaller pipe
#muffler
::==~==#==
AND Question 2(a,b &c):
if this is no a feasible or safe/etcetera solution, (a)How do I assess whether or not the missing catalectic has already caused engine damage and if it’s not that easy to diagnose, (b)how do I determine if it is worth replacing the exhaust, in it’s entirety (catalytic/pipe n muffler ~$300) or (c) leaving it (after I repair the holes) straight piped?
