When I got my 99 4Runner the factory trailer light harness did not work , so I bypassed the little box in the rear on the left side behind the plastic panel and direct wired a new harness , it works great all but the tail lights at night . the grounds are good , the turns and brake lights work fine just no tail lights on the trailer . what else could it be ???thanks

 

Obviously you wired it wrong.

Undo your wiring, and buy a "T-connector" setup for your truck. Plug and play wiring.

Or simply fix the OEM box.

 

you can't really bypass the box-it combines 5 or 6 wires to a 4 pin connector, so one or your functions is combined in error or not connected.

Hopkins makes a plug and play-see my Facebook link for details or splice it in if you don't want to remove both sides of the rear cargo area trim pieces.

 

All wires are connected . I have wired many trucks before and never had this problem . It worked fine for the first week or so then started doing this crap .

 

That's the trouble then-all the wires are connected-so 2 of them are combined.

Can't find a plug and play for it , Oreily and Nappa told me they don't offer them for this suv , don't know what is wrong with factory box as it didn't work when I bought this thing 4 months ago . I pull a horse trailer with it so I need them working because I go to alot of rodeos and trail rides . I know it isn;t meant for towing like that but it has to do until I find the right truck this fall

Getting ready to drop this toyota in a river somewhere . everyweek it needs something new , right now it is needing a rear diff , tranny solonoids , shocks (1 exploded last weekend sitting in driveway) new plug wires as of tonight , fan clutch and others that I can't think of right now .

 

Your part number will be Hopkins 43415 that is the one I used for my 99. I simply spliced in as I did not want to remove other side cargo trim.But plug and play is probably the better way to go- so nothing can go wrong. The factory units just fail-they short out over time I have been told.

This little tester piece is usually at auto parts stores and comes in real handy to be sure your wiring has been done correctly and any trouble/issue is on the vehicle side and not the trailer side of the equation:

Sorry to hear what you are going through with the Runner. Can't help you with the other stuff but I know trailer converters now pretty well.

I tell you at first I was thinking screw a Toyota 4runner , but then I got to thinkin that the owner before me just didn't take care of it right and once I get all that stuff replaced I will have a Like new runner . lol

 

I was thinking along the same lines-if the maintenance gets neglected then things tend to catch up in the long run. But you said it better!
