too bad you're in Oregon....

95% of the guys i have talked to that said this was a bad idea, were over 35yrs of age. and compared to my 20 yrs of age, that's "old" per say. (well oldER)

i dont think i ever said it's a good idea, but it IS a BETTER idea rather than putting halogen bulbs in there that put out half the light for the same price.

i'll probably keep these HID's for my next truck and put the stock halogens back in since i still have them

i used to get flashed with my halogen high beams on...but not these...

Any decent halogen setup will give you safe, usable light without the glare to oncoming traffic. HIDs in halogen housings will NEVER be a better idea than halogens. If you need the power of the sun at night, install some spotlights like you mentioned and relay them to the high beam circuit.

If you read through the link I posted above, you'll see that HIDs in halogen housings are illegal in pretty much every country except the US (outdated automotive laws) and I think a handful of states have taken it upon themselves to write laws against it.

HIDS in non HID equipped vehicles are illegal in every state I've heard of so far..

As for "elder" - I just turned 24.. 3 weeks ago.. Not exactly an ancient. And no, halogens in a halogen reflector setup are not a worse idea than hids in a halogen reflector..

getting flashed with peoples brights is well worth it because i can actualy see and half of them cant, i got 12000k 55watt hids and they are not that blue, inbetween blue and white. and i have 12000k 55watt hids in a set of projector fog lights. i love my set up. if you want HIDs get on it
all these hater that say no HIDs are eather old or cant aford good HIDs. using a proper housing and aiming the lights right will keep from blinding people (unless your in my neck of the woods were half of the driving is up and down hills)
all these old farts are just by trying to down talk HIDs.
i am old, have HID's(converting back to H4's) Can afford to modify my truck..it looks like a $2500 truck but probably have at least 3x's that into it. HID's just have to be in the correct housing IE a Projector.
I spent 4 years stationed at Ft. Richardson, I know the importance of having good lighting in AK.

What i don't get is this: your HID's were $75, they broke so you spent $80 a piece for the best H4's you could find?? why not get another set of HID's? it costs a lot more than $75 for a decent HID install...

I wanna know what Halogen bulbs are $80 a piece. PIAA H4's (best on the market IMO) are $35-45 for the set, let alone $80 a piece.

Honestly, I want to know why people want to rely on a 75 dollar Chinese pnp HID kit for their main source of light. If you want a lot of light buy the kit and throw it in a cheap set of halogen auxiliary lights, like hella 700ff, then just turn em on when you need more light and turn em off so you're not a d-bag in town.

^^^ That's exactly what I plan on doing since my high an low beams on at the same time aren't enough for me during deer season.
I loved my Silverstar Sealed beam lights but they didn't hold up very long, so aren't worth the $40 for the pair to me.
I wish I knew if my cheapo Blazer driving lights would hold up to the heat of a hid light. lol.

Hello, excuse me folks

I dont mean to jack the thread but i do have a question regarding to headlights. Is HID's worth it? I keep hearing alot of pros and cons and both ends seems to weigh evenly.

I know there's a cheap method for "better" headlights is to replace the bulbs and the wiring harness. Would this method be the best bang for the money? I'm starting to get really irritated with my headlights now. I have a 98 limited and i'm not happy with the stock headlights. So i'm not book smart about lightnings or electrical, i will be just buying the parts and follow the instructions. Any advices, suggestions for what i should do about my headlight would be appreciated. If you have experience with something, please share

The time zone changed and it gets dark at 3pm here...... now most of my driving is in the dark, so i want better lights haha.

I would expect a 98 to have headlights deep enough for a thread in projector, like the morimoto mini h1 or mini d2s (h1 is better, however..) However I thought the 98 had fluted lenses whereas the 2000 was clear.. and they can be swapped over easily? I can't say for sure as I don't own a newer 'runner but I've read a few things about retrofitting the newer gens and it looks far easier than doing our current square headlight gen trucks..

Drop in a projector, tighten down the lock nut, plug in some hids and run a relay harness - legit easy and you wont get the same performance out of an upgraded harness and HIDS in your stock lights would suck about as much as your lights do now.

Dont feel like doing much of retrofitting or modifications in that form. More of a PnP new headlights. Not trying to be negative, but if i had quite a bit of money to splurge, i would most likely do some retrofitting to keep my hands/minds busy haha.

Search. Read. PnP HIDs are not a good idea.

The guy with the retro'd newer gen 'runner in this thread will more than likely chime in shortly, actually - try PM'ing him as well ... Retrofitting projectors doesn't have to be near as hard as you're making it sound, especially with something like the Mini D2s or mini H1 projectors which are essentially drop in and go..

so i finally got flashed ONCE. i was sittin at a 4 way stop, and i was on a slight hill...so my lights were shining into the eyes of a buddy of mine lol...said they weren't ever bright until he met me at the stop sign that night..

i'm still enjoying them, and my sound system doesn't cut out as much from the low voltage.

build a harness, it's easy.. Housings are best found on ebay - $25 shipped should do it.

For the harness you would be running battery to relay, relay to parking light (easiest way hands down, to turn it on) high beam solenoid for the projector to the high beam and ground of the stock headlight harness, and then ground the relay and ballast ... done.

Otherwise HID ballasts like turning off with the high beam triggered, turns the relay off
