Starting Issues

Hey guys I am now officially stumped I have a 19989 toyota pickup V6 I have replace the battery, the clamp, starter, and alternator. Some times the thing just doesnt want to start. I will drive it around doesnt matter the distance or anything like that and stop and cut it off say to fill it up or something then it doesnt want to start. I will put the key in and turn the ignition and it dies down like all cares do when they try to start but nothing happens. I hear a click and the dash lights dim because its trying but it doesnt turn over. I thought it was just the negative clamp on the battery wasnt making a good connection because it would become loose sometimes but since i have changed the clamp it stays tight now. sometimes if i just let it sit for a while then try and start it it just starts right up then. The only thing i think it might be is my ignition switch but i dont want to drop alot more cash in this thing so any thoughts guys?

a case of "hot starter" seems likely

Red face

you changed the terminal on the ground cable.

Why not just change the whole cable with a new one or even add another one .

How do you end up getting it started when it does not crank .

Have you checked voltage at the starter solenoid with the switch in start.

Just did a full tune up where i changed all the plugs and the wires on them are aftermarket wires that look in good shape. I have also swapped out the ground cable and the negative cable as well. And when it doesn't crank I usually have to let it sit for a while and comeback later then it starts right up other times if i just give it a few mins then try it starts up it just seems random to me. Usually it wont start when i am riding around then stop to fill up gas then i try and get back in and it wont start. The starter I just put in it was brand new as well as the alternator. Like I said it just seems random to me.

Based on O.P., problem is "click only and no crank" (turn over), and it does not have the chance to sputter. Therefore, plugs, cap and rotor do not have anything to do with this.

fluco72, Good plan not to put too spend too much cash so best to understand how starting circuit works before throwing unnecessary parts into it. I have a simple explanation how starting circuit works here. (For first gen but concept is similar)

Search for "Click" and/or "start" threads, and see Schematic (there's a link on my sig), methodically test individual parts.

Thanks man my dad is an electrician so he knows a little bit about circuits lol and the reason i changed the plugs and everything was because i just got back from about a year and a half active duty military training and a deployment it was having this problem before i left and i felt bad for letting the old girl sit that long without any love so wanted to do a tune up on her the starter was my first guess and it was the original so i assumed it was that but im not complaining on putting those in there.

Hi, just joined this forum but it has really helped me. I'm having the same issue with my truck. sometimes starts right up, and sometimes just wont starts and makes a click sound(from the relay i think), so i guess there is voltage getting thru the relay but the circuit is no completely grounded. tomorrow i'll change negative battery cable to make sure i have a good ground to the engine, plus adding a extra ground from negative pole to the frame. Just changed a ground from engine to chassis, so i guess that one is working well. If not, maybe the ignition switch?? thanks in advance.

Could be starter contacts, relay, bad connections, etc. etc.. Hard to say.

Mine used to do this occasionally. I just hit the connections at the starter with WD40 and it hasn't done it since...that was over a year ago.
