Starter problem after flat battery

Batteries went nearly flat (left something on). Just about started for 2 days, then came to fix it today.
Cold weather so not enough juice in battery to turn it fast enough even twice before it completely flattened it.
Tried jump leads, but whirring / click noise like the bendix drive in the starter is stuck between teeth. But not whirring fast enough to sound like a usual bendix drive issue, so perhaps its something else.
Any ideas for getting it going again please?

A new battery. Sounds like an amperage issue. Battery is most likely damaged internally.

even with a jump start if the dead battery has nothing or isn't able to hold any charge it will not have enough to start.

Just how cold was it??

A discharged battery will freeze.

If your trying to jump start two dead batteries it will take some time to get them to the point where it will crank over.

As the system voltages will equal out so the boost vehicle alternator is putting out all it can.

Depending on the boost vehicle output it could take a good 30 minutes or longer.

Then one also needs to take the size of the cables into the equation as well

Thanks everyone. After your comments I used another jump car with a better connection, revved the jump car hard and the Surf started easily. Drove around for 30 mins and it put some charge back in. Will get the batteries etc checked now.
