Searching for a Short/ Headlamp control module
Hello All! Thanks for taking the time. I've been stopping by to confer with the site for a while now but this is my first post. I got a great deal on a 92 extended cap pick up a few weeks ago (free), but I inherited a small mountain of fixes to do on the thing. Its got a 3.0 with 204K and it lived very near the bayside of long island and was heavily salted yet not too rusted when i got it. My problem now is an electrical Issue where in the middle of what seemed to be a monsoon, my parking lights and tail lights stuck on and have been stuck on ever since. The general consensus seemed to be that the headlamp switch/ stalk usually goes out so I ordered and installed one of those to no avail. Then I noticed that the headlamp relay was hot, so I replaced that as well. Still the lights are stuck on. (I just pull the fuse every time I leave the truck.) Finally, I reluctantly took it into a shop on Friday and dropped it off. They were stumped as well. They said they thought there was a chance it could be the brake light switch down at the pedal which seems unlikely. They also said it could be a headlamp or tail lamp control module which they could not locate in the truck or their manual. I could not locate it in my manual either. My question is Does any one know where the headlamp control module is located on the truck? Does anyone think this is the wrong route to take? I feel like its a short somewhere in the line as I was getting some flickering in the instrument panel last night... Any Ideas? Thanks again

Did it first start when it got wet or was it doing this all along??
Does this by chance have an alarm or the parts of one??
I am pretty sure their is no headlight module on a 92
Did you check the taillight relay why you changed the headlight one when the tail lights were on is curious.
if the contacts in the tail light relay are fused closed that or some sort of alarm could cause the issue.
Something got wet in the rain shower .

I had it for a week and it was fine. The day of the storm is when it first acted up, then the lights stuck on for over a week. Most of that week was bone dry.
To my knowledge it has no parts of an alarm.
I thought there might be no headlight control module on the thing, would be the obvious reason for the manual not showing it.
I changed the headlight switch because the parking lights and the tail lights were stuck on and searching the forums that seemed to be the most common thing to try first, from what I could gather.
I'm going to check the tail light relay in the AM.
I was supposed to bring it back to the shop tomorrow morning and now I feel like I went to the doctors by my post on this forum because as soon as I posted about the problem, I went outside and fired up the truck and the lights turned off. So strange. First time in over a week of dry weather save the last two days. (It's dry now.) I was glad but more frustrated because I know the problem is not fixed.
I'll check the relay, taillight switch and for any loose alarm remnants in the AM. I certainly appreciate your insight. Will keep you posted. Thanks again

I know it rain here all day harder then before I think.
Did they come back on after getting soaked today??
After market radio??
hacked wiring having the memory power hooked into the light circuit for the dimmer..
long shot but possible
being your new to these it might be something simple you just don`t see from lack of Toyota
Hang in there

Rained cats and dogs in the apple today indeed. Still is, matter of fact. I didn't get much of a chance to check the relays etc. because my buddy who is gracious enough to let me use his shop had a big job going. However, the lights did stick on, and I turned off the switch then turned it right back on, then off and they were good. Later I went to get into the truck and the speedo lights popped on for a second like a ghost.
It's funny you mentioned a hacked car stereo because, the one thing I could get around doing today was pull out the junk aftermarket tape player that was in there and at least get it ready for the other cd rig I had and sure enough it was hacked to pieces. I have to check the specifics about the dimmer tomorrow but that sounds pretty fathomable. The plan is to solder all the connections solid in the morning and get this old man emu kit on. (Trying to get as much done as I can before the work bender resumes Wednesday.) Going to check the lot then. I appreciate the intel... Got me thinking. We'll see!
