Odd charging/starting issue.

Well just when you think you're done working on something.....

Truck won't start about half the time now. I can bang on the starter, shake the truck, stomp on the floor board or roll it a few feet and let the clutch out and all of these things will make the starter turn when I hit the key. I'm thinking I need to install a 30 amp relay... will try that this weekend.

Also noticed that the charge gauge in the dash now sits right in the middle where as before it would ride about halfway between there and the top and move a little with rpms, it no longer moves. On top of that when I use the blinkers the radio will cut out for a second and the tach and charge gauges move up and down.

Any ideas? Battery is a 3 year old Red Top and all the connections appear to be good. No blown fuses or anything like that.

Have the battery checked, and check all your grounds.

It's the alternator. Did some more checking and when I turn on my flood lights the alt/batt lights come on in the dash. *sigh* Just more money to spend that I don't have....

You know I love you Blue!!! Got the part ordered through Toyota today and it'll be here on Tuesday, less than 20$ and I'll be back in business.

edit: The rig is dead, d....e....a....d, dead! Was on the way to sell a set of tires and the brake/charge lights came on again, the tack stopped working and the radio died. I had enough left in the Red Top to get back to my parking area but just barely. I coasted in with the engine dead. So I've got a charger on the battery hoping that I didn't kill that part, the brush insert has been ordered and I've got a starter on the way to help get rid of the starting issue that I'm tired of dealing with. Add in a couple of relays and some wires and that starter should work each and every time. If not I'm going to shoot it!

*sigh* I'm going to get a beer.
