Intermitent Blower Fan

the blower fan is going in and out on my 2003 4Runner. when its cold in the morning, no fan. around lunchtime, I'll go back out to the truck and voila!
fan works fine in all power levels. I replaced the relay, but still does the same thing. any suggestions? of course when I brought it in to the dealer it was working, so testing it was useless. No TSB could be found either.

Not sure if this would apply on your model 4Runner, but worn brushes was the problem of intermittent fan operation in my '85:

Might also check the fan switch, I once had a VW where the fan would not work when it was wet or cold. Found out later there was a factory recall for that switch and I had it replaced for free.

I thought it was the relay so I replaced it. Didn't fix the problem, took it back to the dealer, there's a TSB on the fan controller. I'll try to get it and post it up.

By relay do you mean the resistor in the duct work? Usually if a fan is intermittant or is not working on one speed it is the resistor that is bad. This usually screws into the duct work around or near the fan motor assymbly. Again if this is something you have already checked then disregard.

the relay that was replaced is the one in the fusebox, under the hood, after that the dealership said it was the fan controller, next to the blower , underneath the glovebox. that wasn't it either. now they are going to replace the blower fan, TSB? maybe, maybe not. still waiting for the backordered fan.
