ignition wont turn! :(

how it going, just picked up a 1996 toyota 4runner a few weeks ago, put a bilstine shock lift and ome springs on it. 2.5inch in the front and 3inch in the rear.

anyway the reason im posting is after having some fun at the offroad trail my brother and i like to go at (he is in a 1997 4runner same lift) i got swamped pretty good, water a few inches inside of the driver side floor. none on the passenger.
after driving home and letting it sit for about 3-4 hours (nap time) i went out to go get some air senty ˟˟˟˟ so i could take the interior out and let it dry. well the key wont turn. has never happend before, key has always worked great first time.
the key will turn far enough to unlock the steering wheel but not far enough to turn on the aux.

only thing that has been done to the truck sense we turned it off was my brother pushed in the "shift over ride button" so he could put it in neutral and push it outta the way so he could pull his in the garage.

has this happened to anyone? does anyone have any ideas how to fix it? any impute would be greatly apreciated.

Hey i'm suffering the same problem.

I put the key in the ignition, it wont turn. Wiggle wiggle wiggle, it still wont turn. Pull it out and put it back in, if lucky, it'll turn then start. Same problem with my door haha, key sometime get stuck in the door lock o.0 kind of scary. So i only unlock from passenger door because the key slides in, unlocks and pull out easy as pie.

Any one know what to do about this stupid key turn/stuck problem?

Your key is worn down to nothing most likely. Take the vin, go the the dealer and have them cut a key to the key code that your rig came with. This is the only way I get copies of keys.

I think "Vital" is right on this. The keys and the tumblers inside the ignition switch wear out. If the new key doesn't fix the problem, replacing the ignition switch isn't hard.

You will have two keys though, unless you get the door-locks rekeyed.

OK- had the same exact problem...key would not turn on my 95 4runner. Tried all 3 of my keys, WD-40, turning steering wheel, tapping lightly with hammer.... Finally, had a locksmith cut a new key...STILL would not turn. Locksmith worked for over an hour and surmised that the tumblers were too worn. The problem is that you cannot remove the key cylinder unless the the key is turned to acc. The only solution was to drill down through the ignition and hit the release button. (The release button holds the cylinder into the cylinder housing) After breaking a bit, we were able to finally hit the button and pull out the cylinder. Picked up a new key cylinder from autozone for $52.

update:

Got a new key made and they basically cleaned out the ignition a bit. Sprayed some wd40 and airhosed the ˟˟˟˟ out of the hole.

Now it works like a charm
