86 4runner starting troubles

I have a 86 4runner that has been having starting troubles lately. I've checked the battery, and all the conections down to the starter and all seems fine. Some days it starts just fine, turns over and fires right off, others all it does click, it sounds like it's coming from under the hood on the passenger side. Is there a relay or something located there that could be bad? I can usually get it started when it does this after hitting the key like 20+ times. After I do get to start, I have no trouble with it for the rest of the day. I'm not familar with toyota stuff, so I thought I'd ask even if it turns out to be something really simple I'd appreciate any help.

Sounds to me like the starter is going bad or a bad ground on the starter

Here is an easy test to isolate the source of the problem:

Sounds like the common issue with worn copper contacts inside the starter solenoid. Easy to replace, see how to on the web page above.
