How to Swap from Electronic to Mechanical Speedo drive

This tech has only been tested on my 1985 4runner. I swapped from an automatic to a W56D from a 1992 pickup with a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). So I thought that I had got in a bind until I talked to Marlin Crawlers Tech. who told me you could swap them back and forth, however there was doubt about the automatic speedo pickup working.

So the trick to it is pull your Mechanical pickup out of your transfer case by removing the 12mm bolt and give it a little pull....

Repeat this on your new W56D or other VSS equipped manual transmission.

Now if you count the teeth you will notice that the automatic gear has 19 teeth and the manual has 18. This corresponding number is also molded on the gear face itself.

Now you can remove the clip from each speed pickup. gently remove the gears with a little tug and swap them. The VSS will not accept the gear because it requires two notches however the mechanical pickup will accept the 18 tooth gear that you want to put back into the transmission.

You can now reinstall your retainer..(c-clip) and install your newly assembled mechanical speed pickup.

Disclaimer -This worked for me on my truck I can not guarantee it will work for all toyota transmissions.

Happy Modding
