Keyless entry...

I am wainting keyless entry for my rig since Im getting tired of scratching around the lock in the door and for convenience. Has anyone done this and what system should I got with, I am looking to spend less then $200. My rig already has power locks and windows so I dont have to upgrade that part. Isnt the keyless entry just a piggy back computer type thing that recieves a signal from the remote and sends power to unlock the doors?

I got one from Toyota and it was pretty easy to install. I think it was $130. Good luck

I installed a remote starter/alarm that also activates the electric door locks for about $130.00.

I installed a Commando FM-870 Alarm w/remote start a bit ago and I love it:

Just a thought. If you already have power locks you may have the Toyota "BomB proof" system already installed. If so, go down to the stealer and pick up a remote for $70 bucks or so. I'll give you the quick the installation for second gens, if you like.

Cool... If you can afford it, the -870 with the 2-way remote is a lot of fun - and looks cool as well.

That 870 looks like a good deal. Will the remote start work with my manual if I leave the tranny neutral?

About how long did it take you to install this? How hard was it to do? Were the instructions clear?

Ummm, the first one was about 4 hours with most of that time fighting being outside in 40 degree weather and getting COLD to the bone. The second one was about 2 hours - it was a warmer day and I was more familiar with the system.

The instructions are very clear, and you'll get access to specific wiring color (and location) coding info for your truck - which was spot-on for the two trucks I did.

Know that there is a good amount of "stuff" to do, more than you may think. You'll tap into power, ground, two ignition circuits, starter, brake pedal _switch_, brake _lights_, neutral safety switch (if a manual), interior lights, parking lights, power locks (if you have them). And then add a siren under the hood, a hood-open safety, and a couple of other things.

You end up with a decent nest of wiring which can take some time to neaten up and tuck away.

You'll also have a number of programming options to go through on the system. You can set a TON of stuff from "how long does the starter crank for" to "do you want the doors to lock when the truck starts" and passing through "silent alarm setting", "flash lights for acknowledgment", etc.

You can take a lot of the defaults and have a running system - but there will be one thing you HAVE to change which is an indicator of how the system knows that it really did start the car. It's documented on an insert that comes with the system.


Don't let me scare you... It's straight-forward to do, but there is a LOT to do. Read the manual a few times to get a handle on everything and you'll be fine. Do the wiring NEAT - especially the ignition and starter.

Does it come with absolutly everything I need to install it? Im not a hack-job persone so everthing will be soldered, shrink wrapped, ect.

The alarm/starter will ship with everything you need in respect to itself - i.e., you have to supply solder, heat shrink, cable ties, etc. Maybe it's better said that it comes with the main unit, siren, wiring harnesses, LCD remote (for the FM-870), standard remote, batteries for the remotes, and a relay & relay socket if you want to wire in a starter cutout. The only thing I can think of is that depending on where you mount the siren, you may have to extend it's leads.

Distance is an interesting topic.. I don't know that I've tried it from 2500', but I've certainly had it fire up from 1/4 mile (1300'). Getting that 1/2 mile distance will depend a lot on where/how you've mounted the receiver antenna, what's between you and the truck, weather, etc.

One "trick" that I do to get max range is to hold the transmitter antenna against my chin, temple, forehead - any hard spot on my head. You can do this with any RF transmitter to increase it's range. I use this when I'm walking down the stairs at work and want to fire up the truck in the garage - which is a good 300' line-of-sight but also through 3 brick walls and from a large interior steel staircase.

In short.. I've never had a complaint about the distance.

I think it's a pretty overlooked and underrated piece. I hope you guys agree!

I guess I'm a bit biased, but I'd also bought another similar alarm from a different mfg and returned it the same day 'cause it was junk. So, I have the character to say I didn't like it and find something else.

Last question. I was wondering if I could make one of the auxiliary buttons roll down my rear window. My key doesn't work in the rear and it would be really nice if I could do that. Is it possible?

Technically, yes, but it'll take some work on your part.

The system is set up with 6 (I think) outputs that can be controlled by various buttons and combination of buttons on the remote. Each output is configured to produce a voltage in the active state. If you use this to drive a relay, and then use the relay to parallel the switch that rolls your window (or turns on aux lighting, or kicks the fan on high, or or or) then you can have remote control of that object. Cool huh?

It's a bit hidden on the info page, but the Install and User's manuals are up on the site:

(look in the left column, there's a section titled "Manuals/Info!".

Pull the installation manual and check out where they talk about the "H8" outputs. That covers the extra outputs and control.


Also.. think about getting the temperature sensor. It lets you do two things, a) With the two-way remote you can see what the temp is in the car, b) you can program the system to automatically start your car at a certain temp. The kinda' bummer is that autostart option is only setup to keep the car fropm freezing, not to keep it from boiling. So, if you live where it drops below 0 it's cool. If you live in the heat, it won't be a lot of use - but it's still cool to see how hot it is in the car, and then decide to run it for 10 minutes to cool it off.

I would like to know more about this.
I'm not really interested in anything more than keyless entry.
I have the original brochure from 94 and keyless entry/security was an option.
Do you think there is some factory wiring for keyless entry?
