Hey guys, i have an 81 yoat. I just recently replaced the motor & am wondering, did i mess something up when putting the motor in? The transmission will shift completely fine when off. Trying to turn it on in gear it will want to roll. When the truck is on and i try shifting i get nothing; grinds real nasty for reverse. I've looked around on the old google and i can't find a solid answer to this problem, if anyone has any input it would be appreciated.

Try bleeding your clutch slave cylinder.

 

Oh man, i can't tell you how many times i bled that bastard. I'm hearing my clutch might be stuck? or just not working...??

 

Hopefully the clutch was installed right.

 

I'm assuming that when you say you try turning it on while it is in gear and it rolls, you mean that you are turning it on with the clutch pedal depressed and it still tries to roll?

How does your clutch pedal feel when you push it in? Is there any resistance? Or does it slam to the floor? I know that you said you bled it a thousand times, but sometimes you may have to bleed it 2000 times to get the air out of it.

Have a friend watch your slave cylinder as you push your clutch pedal in. If there is little to no movement, you need to bleed your system some more.

Every now and then someone puts the clutch disc in backwards...but having never done it, I don't know what kind of symptoms it would cause.

My truck did very weird stuff when the master cylinder was going out. But it's weird that it would only start doing that to you after replacing the motor. It's not by chance a later model motor with maybe a different flywheel? I always forget whether you match the clutch to the year engine you have, or the year transmission...

 

could always bleed by yourself. what works for me, i place a small piece of small hose over the open bleeder, it needs to fit snugly. then place other end in container full of brake fluid, once the air is pumped through the hose it can only suck in fluid not air. once your set up pump away on the pedal stopping occasionaly to check fluid level in the master. once no air pumps out close bleeder remove hose. good luck and when you replcaed the motor did you remove trans? my thinking here i once pulled a tranny and just unbloted the slave, while unbolted the piston inside the slave came all the way out with the static pressure from the master. once i pushed it back in it seemed to work fine bolted up however on the last 1/8 inch of travel fluid would bleed past the seal and not allow the clutch to fully disengage. also pedal bracket may be getting close to being cheesed
