Sounds like:

A. You have a crappy boat ramp

B. Are trying to unload the boat by yourself

C. Your e-brake/rear drums are poorly/improperly adjusted

D. Bacon

E. All of the above

A 1500 lb boat/trailer should be no problem for any Toyota with proper brakes, even a Corolla.

If you do a TC disc E brake, and one rear wheel has poor traction... It's in the drink she goes!


If you have a locker, maybe not so much.

But an open or ltd slip diff, and no brakes on the individual axles, no.

There is also the Pirate Line-Lock... But there's something about it I don't like.

Doesn't mean it don't work though.

 

I boat alone a lot. I fish. Even if there's someone with me, they are often inexperienced. Plus the truck is a stick and you're 1' from the water with the back tire. Would you want some casual friend driving? I usually take out after dark and there's the potential error factor of being tired. I have a corolla and it's ebrake is awesome.

If I had the transfer case brake, at least there would be one wheel trying to stop me. That's really a weak complaint and it is in every thread about ebrakes on here. I'd be all over that thing if I thought a '90 toy PU was my optimum tow vehicle.

 

I don't get it.
Go buy some rear brake pads, get your drums turned and use your e-brake. Theres no reason to buy a new truck to tow your 1500 pound boat.
if it was like, a massive 25 foot 60,000 dollar boat then thats totally different.

Fyi: The toyota E-Brake is fine
I can hold a ranger on a steep hill with my e-brake...

FZJ80's.
They have disc brake rears with factory e brakes. By far one of the best setups one could get.

 

If it were me I would just lock it in 4 low, if you think its necessary then block the tires as well. Your boat I would think would be pretty much floating by the time your back tires a foot away from the water so really your just holding the trailer. Which being half submerged in water wouldn't weigh hardly anything. You still don't want the truck rolling into the water of course so whatever you come up with just test it on something three times as steep. I haven't had a parking brake in 2 years and have never had it move on me in low range, I do however always block a tire when their is something downhill I have to worry about rolling into.

And it's @ a 12" gear... And it's an off-set, non-centered diff...

And, lol, none of them hardly work. Owners/Drivers never use them b/c they don't need to, they've got a parking prawl(?) and they never get adjusted...

You wind up with mush... Sad b/c the best thing you could do to a FzJ is get rid of the blasted Viscous Coupler. (If it's not used enough, it can seize. If you use it too much IT WILL seize)

Then you can E-brake drift and turn just like a rally car
