What would you buy for a beater car?

I picked up a Volvo Wagon for $650. It's quite a beast, but still gets about 25mpg. Seats 5 comfortable with gear, and the rear seats fold down to haul more gear.

And they flex

But really, a little honda or yota would be perfect. Maybe even a little 2wd yoter.

My beater is my 1993 Nissan NX2000. It has the SR20DE (140HP/130TQ stock) engine that the Infiniti G20 and the Sentra SE-R and 200SX SE-R all shared. I was looking for a 91 Honda CRX Si but well Hondas are so common. Besides the Nissan is faster, and has a larger engine (2.0) than the CRX (1.5/1.6). It is quick, has T-tops, and I love the looks that I get from the Honda guys that don't know what my car is. It is also rare as they only made them for the 1992 and 1993 model years. And once my truck is done, the Nissan will be getting a Turbo engine!

I drove a 87 Civic SI for a couple of years that I got cheap cause the timing belt broke. Had 225000 on it when I got it. 330000 when I sold it still running good. No cancer A/C still worked and no torn seats or worn out carpet. The SI's used better grade upholstery. Whatever you wind up with put a new timing belt on quick most all of these cars being mentioned have interferance motors and a little work up front can save a lot of grief far from home. Oh yeah, if the water pump is timing belt driven replace that too. Thats actually what took out the belt in my Honda.

As soon as I thought about getting a beater gas saver and the wife gave her thumbs up it seemed like the supply of cheap gas savers dried up around the Portland Area because everyone else thought the same thing.
I wanted a 91-94 Tercel 2 door 4 speed, they seem to get a lot better mileage than the 5 speeds.
Ended up with this hunk of junk for cheap ($700):

'89 Tercel with 114K on the clock

there's a blue button that says "New Topic". Why did you choose this old thread of all things to ask?
Has the OP graduated yet?
