want loud go with straight pipe. want louder drill some holes in the straight pipe. want really loud, exhaust manifolds only.

i like the roaring sound of the flowmaster. they also make some deep toned mufflers, deltas.

Borlas absolutley suck. and they're expensive.

The loudest muffler is probably going to be the flowmaster single chamber. Putting a glasspack in front of a muffler will act like a resonator. It will quiet the whole system and not just the interior noise.

I have a dual outlet 14" stainless Magnaflow with 2.25" end pipes going into 18" stainless 3" tips;
And my truck sounds like it has a V8 under the hood!!!
The thing with straight pipes is that your taking away the needed back-pressure the engine needs; so you are accually loosing power!!!

It's a race series flowmaster. You're typical flowmaster, the 40 series, super 40, etc... has two chambers. The single chamber has only one chamber, it is a lot smaller then then you typical 4x9 muffler. On the downside it only comes in a 2.5" and up. It would be good for those of you that came factory with 2.25" tubing.
Here is a link to it. http://performance-curve.com/index.a...ROD&ProdID=131

Borla's sound great... I've run them on all my watercooled VW's and they've never sounded like Ricers... course they're they're VW's so they've got that going for them

Borla's have a nice even tone that has always been to me devoid of the stupid raspy/tinny ricer tone... the 22re is a big enough 4banger that it should give a decent tone if you get headers to match... and please none of those chinsy "Honda Loser" can mufflers, just run a stainless pipe out the back... nopthing say "I don't understand engines" like a guy with a can muffler that has a 5in opening that's being fed by a 1in ehxaust...

best of all I would say would be to just cop to it and run a set of exhaust cut-off's out of JC WHitney... flip the lever and VIOLA!!!! NO muffler... that's the loudest right there... then when you get pulled over, just flip the lever back and pretend like the cop's crazy...

Expensive yes, but I couldn't dissagree with you more...

Flowmasters sound like crap IMO, and every chevy guy on the planet's got a bloody "FLowmaster" sticker on his POS so I avoid that all together

+1 they actually made mine quieter except at high RPM's when they start singing.

If you want loud without sounding like someone is gargling special sauce (straight piped) a Flowmaster 40 non delta is a good choice. It will get louder after it burns in so give it 1000 miles before you decide if it's loud enough.

I was getting ready to replace the headers on my 22re. Where did you get your headers? Did they make a big performance difference? And how much were they???

I have converted my exhaust to 3inch, also have a 30inch glasspack. I think it sounds awesome. I get kudos on it all the time from the full size guys. I have noticed a kick ass power increase as well as WAY better gas mileage. Next investment is probably TRD headers, but they are so EXPENSIVE. The labor costs are probably more than the headers. Anyone know what the cost of installing TRD headers on a 3.4L 2001 Toyota Tacoma Dcab 4wD would be?

The master tech at the muffler shop I go to which I might add has a very good reputation around here says Borlas suck and are over priced. I think I agree. I got a 3 inch conversion + my glasspack + labor for 245.00. The guy does really clean work and I trust him. This system sounds better than anything I have ever head on a Toyota V6 IMO.

The tone is so deep, it sets off car alarms when I jump on it!

Ill take some pics tomorrow of my setup.

I know hooker and pacesetter make a header for the 22r. I'm sure there are others that I do not know about.

Straight out the heads, you'll need a good supply of sparkplug wires and an extinguiser. I like the sound of my Cherry Bomb Turbo Dual outlet $27

I had Pacesetter headers on my 22R. They suck - had exhaust leaks like crazy because the flange wasn't flat. I had them Jet Hot ceramic coated - would DEFINITELY recommend that.

A friend of mine had the Thorley headers on his. Much better. They are very highly tuned though, so get VERY quiet at the tuning revs.

Borla cat-back on the Impala. Yes, it's expensive. Yes it's worth it. Keep in mind they are ALL stainless - it will definitely be the LAST exhaust you'll ever buy. Plus it fit like factory, and was about 100 lbs lighter than the factory pipes.

If you are looking for loud, you should be careful not to get the pipes too big - the noise comes from the expansion of the air - bigger pipes=less expansion.

I personally had a Magnaflow 18" universal and it was pretty nice. It was loud and a little throaty (can't make a V6 sounds throaty really). Since then I have added a 15" Allied Resonator because of the drone at highway speeds. It sounds great/medium loud/throaty from the outside and is quiet(er) from the inside!

I haven't read the entire thread yet... but these two items caught my eye. There is a HUGE difference between loud and deep/heavy sounding exhaust. Throwing a huge muffler or small loud one on a 3.0 will make it sound like a ricer and you'll lose the throaty tone you may be looking for.

I've run a number of different exhaust systems on 22re's, 3.0's, 3.4's... I've run Dynomax, Borla/TRD, a 3" brand I can't remember, a cheap "turbo" muffler from an exhaust shop, a basic stock type muffler, and a Jardine system on a 3.0. Personally, I liked the Dynomax the best; very mellow sounding. The Borla/TRD is louder than I'd like, but at cruising spead, it's not bad. Thr turbo mufflers make the truck sound like a ricer.... 3.0's, 22re's and 3.4s to some extent, just can't mix loud w/ throaty...

when reading all this advice, keep in mind exhausts sound different with different vehicles. I have a borla on my 4runner, not much louder than stock IMO. BUT had a borla on other vehicles, roared. For the loudest, just go straightpipe.

Or you could always... place a cutout in front of your muffler. Open it up when you want it loud and close it when you wish for it to be quieter.
