Torque Converter Question
#1
alright guys
I have an 88 4runner with a 3.4 swap running the original 340h behind it that has 152,000miles on the trans. I know I am asking for bugs in my system running this kind of swap so keep the flaming to a min. Anyways, I think I have diagnosed my issue but I have had time to test it yet. I think my No. 3 selenoid is not working or its the TC clutch. The number three controls the TC for both 340h and f transmissions. It seems to appear that my trans is functioning ok but it gets a little toasty on the highway. For instance, I would be cruising around 65-70 and I let of the gas to coast and it seems like the tc kicks in and my RPMs drop pretty good. It does how ever feel a little like engine braking. But the minute I even slightly touch the gas they shoot back up agian to where the rpm was when I let off of the gas. It doesnt feel like its down shifting though. My plan is to connect 12v to the No. 3 trans selenoid pin on the trans where the engine harness connects. I can do this until later today. Until then I was just wonder if anyone ever experienced the TC clutch go bad or No. 3 selenoid go bad. Thanks for any input.

Yes, of course they do.
- Does the #3 solenoid ever go bad ?
Yes, of course they do.
A test to see if the lockup is working:
- Drive at a constant normal speed where the TC should be locked upped, say on the highway.
Maintain the RPM's with your right foot on the gas and GENTLY apply some brake with your left foot on the brake pedal. You want to press the pedal just enough to turn on the brake lights but not enough to actually engage any braking action. If the RPM's increase a little (like 200 ~ 300 RPM's) then the TC was locked up.
