Thoughts on dealer installed mods

Well I bit the bullet today and finally ordered myself a new truck. My 2nd Gen runner has alot of miles and has served me faithfullly for almost 5 years. I plan on keeping it around as my weekender rig but I need a new DD. I ordered a 2006 White Taco. Went with the Extra Cab, TRD offroad, 6 speed. I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on the dealer installed mods. For an extra 3K or so this dealership will do a 3" revtek,285's on some nice 17" wheels, a billet grill and few other bling mods. I'm sure I could could squeek by a bit cheaper buying the parts myself and having someone install it but my problem is I live in Cali but since I'm active duty Military I can still license a vehicle in my homestate of Idaho and not mess with any emission crap. I am going home for a 2 week trip just to get this truck. It would be nice to get the initial mods done and outta the way while I'm there. Let me know what your thoughts are on dealer intalled mods.

If they will warranty it and keep your factory warranty in tact as well that may not be a bad deal depending on what wheel and tire combination they are throwing on there. The wheels and tires alone could easily run $2000. While the Rev-Tek isn't very expensive having it installed at a dealer may not be a bad idea as Toyota has rejected some Tacoma owners warranty claims due to lifts and larger tires.

The bling grill, is just that

I would say, three grand isn't too shabby for all of that. Or should I say; all that and not having to install it yourself. What about a supercharger - or does it have the 4.0L?

X2 on the warranty aspect.
ive also seen where they will honor the dealer install, but not an independent install.

i agree that the likelihood of the dealership/TMC honoring the new vehicle warranty makes the $3k a bit more acceptable... but it's a toss-up. the rev-tek is a spacer lift, no?

also of note: like you, i've had to move on from my 2nd gen... just got a new 06 4runner SE. (however i didn't hang on to the 93.) i've been meaning to start a new thread here but haven't been on the forum lately.

If you are concrened about the warranty aspect, get it in writing otherwise whatever they say means nothing, also make sure it is not a specific dealer warranty, which won't do you any good when your in Cali.

Personally I wouldn't care much about the warranty, because I can pretty much guarantee they will not extend the Toyota warranty coverage to any aftermarket products, only Toyota or TRD parts. I doesn't matter much to me because Toyota can only deny a warranty claim if it is affected by the mod, in other words if your engine blows up, they can not deny your claim just because you had bigger tires, also the burden of proof lies on Toyota to prove any modification caused a specific problem.

You can probably save a lot of money doing some work your self or at a independent shop, but if you have the $$ and don't want to spend your time on it, then go for it.

i'd definitely say go for it. maybe not the billet grill and all the bling crap b/c this is a toyota not a pos gm bus. wheels/tires/lift from the dealer for that much definitely sounds like a good deal. plus it doesn't sound like you have the time to spend putting a lift, etc on. Mine as well get it w/ it and you can enjoy it right off the lot.

Man i wish i was getting a new taco! Nice Buy

I think it totally depends on the parts they're putting on. I'm guessing the dealership won't be putting on goodyear mtr's, and some nice rims to go with them. $3k seems a little steep to me, especially if they don't specify what aftermarket brands they're using. look into it a little bit more and make sure you're getting quality stuff... otherwise you'd be better off (and save money) doing the mods yourself.

You should tell this to all of the Tacoma owners who have had their E-locked rearend blow up on 05+ trucks and then had Toyota deny the warranty because their trucks showed visible signs of offroading or had larger than stock tires and were stuck with a $1400+ repair bill.

This is precisely why I think it is a good deal if they are willing to stand behind the modifications they perform and keep the factory warranty intact.

If it were me I would go up the chain of command at Toyota, and if that didn't work maybe contact a lawyer.

I would love to see a Toyota dealer put in writing that Toyota Corporate will honor the Toyota warranty when the dealer adds aftermarket (non-Toyota/TRD) equipment. I just don't see it happening, and if it does, the dealer would probably get spanked, if Toyota Corporate ever had to pay out a claim.
