Tacoma vs. Tundra

I'm in the market for a new truck as a daily driver, looking to get back into a Toyota, probably 01-04 4 door Tacoma. It'd probably be 2wd, and I'm in search of one with the TRD package. I've noticed that you can find a Tundra 2wd with TRD package, similar year and miles, for much cheaper than the Tacomas. It's mostly the Access cabs, but I've also found several crew cabs for the same or less money. Is there any reason why the Tundras are cheaper? I'm really wanting the Tacoma, but it's hard when you can get a full size truck at the same price. Thanks for any input.

I've noticed the same thing, i think its because the demand for a small to mid size truck is higher.

Better gas mileage, more aftermarket support, better equipped for off-road stock, etc. You will notice the same for a brand new truck. Similarly equipped Tacomas and Tundras will be about the same, with the Tacoma being slightly cheaper.

But if you're not going to be off-roading, why a TRD package? And if you are going to, why a 2WD?

No plans for off road, but the locker on the TRD Prerunner would be nice to have. I had a 97 4runner, go stuck on wet grass once in the back yard, not fun. Probably wouldn't use it maybe once a year, but it'd be nice to have. I'm keeping my eye out for a 4wd, but doesn't look doable in my price range. Thanks for the input, any others?

You could have gotten out of the grass, but IMO, you'd still have been stuck, locker or not. The only place that a 2WD w/ locker will be vastly inferior to a 4WD is in mud, snow, loose gravel, or in your situation, wet grass. I'd take an open diff 4WD over a locked 2WD any day of the week.

If it works out with the 4wd im looking at, then yeah ill have a 4wd. ill probably be forced to get a 2wd with trd package due to pricing, good bit of difference in cost. i know the locker would have made a ton of difference on my 4runner (that and some good tires), it would be sufficient.

Cheaper, as in price up front? I've found plenty of Tundra's for a good bit cheaper than a Tacoma, that's the whole reason the Tundra is in consideration for me.

I wanted the extra room for the kids so I picked the Tundra. It is crazy you can pick up a used Tundra for the same price if not cheaper than the Tacoma.
