it isn't hard but like any other skill it takes a lot of practice to master. on top of that there are many things that can cause problems. the good thing is that you will get to practice on the inside of the door first but before you get to that are you going to repair anything on the door? if so you need to do your repairs first. the easiest thing to do is take all of the guts out of the door so you dont have as much to mask. get some red scuff pads and scuff it all really well, anything shiny is bad. at this point you will be ready to clean it up and mask it for paint. while it is not necessary to mask, it makes prepping the outside of the door much easier. you will need some wax and grease remover to wipe before you spray and you can also use a mixture of alcohol and water to keep static down and to get any remaining dust. if the outside of the door is in good shape you can sand with 400-600 grit sand paper or you could just use the scratch pads. on exterior panels it is essential to get all of the edges and grooves really well as this is where most paint jobs start to peel. as for paint i would first try local body shops and try to beg some scraps. auto paint is haz mat so they might be glad to give some away. i would use the same manufacturer for base coat and clear coat. if you take your time you can get good results. the only thing that would concern me is the size of your compressor but you will have a better idea when you spray the inside of the door.

consider a air/water separator for your compressor if you are going to run your compressor alot you will get some water in your line which is especially bad for painting they are not very expensive you can get them at harbor freight. its not a bad idea to have one anyways. here is a link to the first one i found on google http://yhst-13185147461285.stores.ya...airwatsep.html

!

Yes HPLV are the best and in IMHO SATA makes the best gun hands down! As far as a "watertrap" just put it between the hose and the gun and go to town

it is not that the HVLPs are the best they are just the most efficient, less material lost as overspray. SATAs are excellent guns but unless you are willing to shell out $300 bucks or more forget it. be very wary of buying used guns because they most likely need a rebuild. rebuild kits for these guns are expensive as well, if i recall correctly it was $80 bucks or better. iwata makes a great gun and devilbiss makes some good ones as well. one of the best shop water filters i have ever seen uses a roll of toilet paper in a housing when they get wet just pitch and replace. the ones that mount on the gun are better than nothing. when do you plan on painting?
