Bob, thats one hell of a write up you got there. I did the same to my 3rd Gen, but am about to embark on the same procedure for my 4th. I know they changed, but what a reference source you put out. Great write up!

I'll post pics as well, if I can remember, I'll write everything up and forward it to you for a write up!!

Guys,

thanks for the compliments. hey keisur, thanks for the part #s. ill add it to the write up.

ive noticed a few things w/ my install that may have gone awry. first, i may have not fully fastened all the snaps in the interior body panels. when i go down my alley, there are a lot of high pitched rattles. ill have to tear it apart and redo some of them.

also, my sliding interior moonroof thing---not the moonroof itself---does not slide back anymore. i know what it is: that 2nd layer of HTM that I put on the 1st layer probably was too much weight for the adhesive and brought both down. there is nothing else that would get in the way of it sliding rearwards. lesson learned.

anyways, i doubt ill have time to do the doors this weekend but at the very least, i can finish the 3rd part of this write up.

Guys,

I finished the 3rd and final part of this write up. Of course, I'm going to do a write up on the doors, but that will be its own write up (article as I call them), but it'll be linked to Part 3 of this article anyways.

Oh, I've been to 2 Home Depots and 2 Lowes in So Cal. I have NOT been able to find them, even w/ me bringing in pics that Keisur provided.

Bob,

I have to say that is one awesome writeup! Great job! Just the writeup had to take a ton of time, and I know I greatly appreciate it! Thanks,

Chris

Humm, I feel like I went unheard here

Bob, Lowes in Pico Rivera has it AND you can order it from Mc Master Carr, Mc Master is a little more expensive....

I may be going to Pismo (late decision), If I do, you want me to get you some?

Bob,

Did you use a heat gun at all when applying the HTM?

I just picked up 4 more rolls last friday and completed the interior and floor of my runner. There were about 25 more rolls one the shelf. Maybe they accidentally delivered the shipment that was supposed to go to your Lowe's to my Lowe's, hehe.

Guys,

I dind't use a heat gun but i did leave the HTM sheets out in 100 degree heat inside the garage. It was easy to work w/, but again, its not malleable. To me for the floors and roof, its perfect. For the doors, it'll probably be too thick.

Hey Keisur, so how many rolls have you gone thru? Do you notice a difference? And youre probably right, they did deliver it all to your Lowes!

Socaleric: I still have some HTM sheets left and if they allow me to exchange it for the Peel N Seal, then im good. If not, i may take you up on that.

I think it took me 4 rolls for the floor, 2 rolls for all four doors. I do notice a big diff. even the wife said it sounds like hers now, her '03 4runner that is. so if she noticed the quietness than it must be doing something. the vibes are all gone. I still need to pick up some carpet padding and do the ceiling and put carpet padding on the floors. that'll be another "pull all seats and interior again." I must have thought that was fun or something to have left the padding out the first time. :pat: I forgot about it until I had the seats out and couldn't see myself driving to lowes (2 miles) with no seats and a manual tranny. I guess I could have just clutchless shifted or just left it in 1st the whole way.

All this talk about sound deadening and see what you made me do!!!!!!!!

Well, I've gone and done it...

... to my 97's four doors, both inner and outer panels. I figured that was the simplest stage one approach to take.

All it took was one half roll of Brown Bread (slightly over $100 with priority shipping) and about 5 hours with one person helping me. Talk about STICKY!! I even took photos, if anyone is interested.

Using some of the sound isolation concepts talked about in all the product websites I thought it made sense to go ahead and do the entire outer panel not just behind the speakers. I even went so far as to apply it to the small speakers next to the side mirrors!

I used to have to turn up my radio to hear it clearly at speed. So much so, that when I came to a stop sign, I couldn't believe it was that loud!! Now it is much clearer and I don't have to crank it up, unless I want to.

They say you don't need heat to apply this stuff, but I wouldn't know about that. It was over 100 here in Chino Hills!!

BTW I also did the deckplate mod and "duct tape ISR". (What can I say, I like to test before I commit.) It appears to have made a small performance difference. I'll see if it produces any real MPG gains. I can't believe how loud it gets though, at around 4500 RPM. It drowns out everything. Just driving around it does remind me to keep my foot out of the gas. Hmmmm, maybe that's how the mod gets better gas mileage.

BTW2 Anyone try the Axiom static cling window tinting?

I'd love to see the pics you took of the door as I'll probably do the doors this or next weekend. And it really sounds like the doors is the key to a real quiet cabin. Can't wait.

Guys,

I mentioend that I had some high pitch noises coming from the headliner, most noticeable when driving down the back alley at slow speeds. Do you know what the fix was?

Pismo 4RJ!

I have no idea why, but after the trip, those squeaks are gone. I mean completely gone!

Could have been the jostling and the up-n-down. Whatever it was, it definitely save me some time from tearing that stuff out for the 3rd time.

I'd like to thank Bob_98SR5 for posting such detailed pics and explanations on the removal of the headliner. It must have taken you a long time to do and I greatly appreciate it. Maybe I'll take some pics of my deadening project and post them....

Thank you, thank you...

it was probably just some of the plastic panelling touching some new spots on the body and after the 4RJ they got worn down enough to where everything is right again. glad to hear the cricket is gone though.

...and I ain't even finished! Thanks for the compliment. It's good to know that documenting these things are appreciated.

I just ordered the McMasters Peel-N-Seal (thanks SocalEric, I finally ordered it) for my doors. I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow and try to apply it tomorrow night or on Sunday. As SocalEric said, the doors make a big difference.

And yes, do take pics. I'm especially interested if you have a different year 4runner (other than a 98) and if there are different things/ways/methods of disassembly than I documented. The moonroof and garage door holder unit changed from 99 onwards. if you took pics of that and how to disassemble that, i could add it to my write up.

Hey Keisur: are you finished w/ your project?

Not yet. I haven't touched it in about 2 weeks. got 4 more rolls of P&S that are sitting in the garage. I still have the ceiling and the rear door to do and finish the little space under the drivers feet that I couldn't because I ran out of P&S about 2 feet too short, sheesh! I had to take some time away because, man after doing just the whole floor my finger tips felt like ET fingers and were sore as all-get-up! I may finish it up tomorrow since I have everyother friday off and tomorrow is one of them . plus it's been a little cooler with the rain and I got a fan for the garage so it stays cool in there now and the fan helps blow all the paper P&S backing out of the car while I'm working on it, hehe. I also have to cut new rear speaker mounts for the 6.75"ers since I tried using 3/4" MDF. the door panel won't fit back on because apparently it's changed since the '96 model so the same bracket won't work, well duhh!!!:pat: right now I have the panel hanging by just the top part that slides into the window slot at the top. Now I'm going to try to make a bracket out of 1/4" "shee-lacked" plywood and I think that will work. The Shee-lacked-ness is for water proof-id-ness.

I did the P&S on the back deck. Then followed up with a self-sticking foil-backed foam that is used for insulating ductwork. Laid Toyota's rubber mat on top of that, then 1/2" carpet pad. Then filled the side cavities with polyurethane foam. I'm nearly finished, just waiting on a few clips from the dealer to replace the ones that either broke or don't look sturdy enough to hold. I'll let you know how it turns out once the last panel is installed. It can only be better. I couldn't stand to listen to the stereo at highway speeds because of road noise.
