Receiver Hitch Shackle vs. Hook?

I'm debating whether or not to get a receiver hitch shackle or hook. What are some thoughts on pros or cons for either. Any reasons why one be better than the other? i.e. is one generally thought to be stronger or more secure than the other?

Well, while I can't give a rundown on the physics of the whole thing, just looking at the difference between the two, if you had to use one for recovery, do you want to use something that is open on one side, or something that is completely closed and will distribute the dynamic force being applied to it? I know some guys use hooks, but I feel safer using shackles. There is a reason why some off road clubs won't even let you on trail runs without having at least a couple of them.

I have both.

the shackle is nice in that the strap can't fall off

the hook is nice in that you can put the strap on and off a lot easier

Both are rated at similar capacities, more limited by the hitch pin holding the device in the receiver than the device itself.

I just screwed my shackles to my tailgate. Will that be a problem?

I believe that the shackle would be safer and better. That hook won't work at nearly any angle of recovery. You can't always be pulled straight out,and because of the angles I would choose the shackle, you also don't have to worry about the rope coming off. All you have to worry about is breaking the shackle, winch line,or tow rope. The shackle would probably be the least likely to break. Hope this helps.

I had similar thoughts on the matter. Thanks all. I shall purchase a shackle.
