I was watching one drive down the road the other day and was wondering the same thing! If those little Suzuki Samurais do so well offroad why wouldn't the rav4? Just make sure she doesn't roll it. My g/f rolls stuff. lol

Theyr'e good vehicles, we have a 2002 and never have had a problem with it...never taken in off the road, but does well in the snow with AWD

I think the only downfall would be the lack of a 2-speed transfer case...that would make it pretty tough to do much off road.

My wife has a 96 Rav 4. I took it back in the woods and it sucked. The AWD doesnt work the same way 4wd does in our trucks...its basically a front wheel drive vehicle, when the center diff detects the front slipping it transfers some power to the rear. Doesnt work well. Plus it sits low to the ground. It's built on the Camry platform afterall.

im betting the IRS, limited wheel travel, lack of low range gears, low ground clearance, and an open center differential will spell disaster for offroad fun.

i would think graded dirt roads, nothing more challenging than that.

as for that build, thats BADASS!!!!!

hey the suzuki samurai is an awesome offroad rig. my friend in sd has one, and she wheels the crap outta that thing, always jumping it, all that, and it has never once left her stranded. those things may be the only thing that cam compete with our yotas. haha. id love to see what a rav4 can do offroad, its small enuf for it

...and it has no choice of high-range or low-range. So it's not a true 4x4. Period.

as long as you keep it real light you will be ok, but you wont be able to take her very far. the rav4 isnt really meant for anything more than a gravel road

It's built on a car frame + no real 4wd = off road troubles unless you consider a rough road 4 wheelin'.

If you wouldn't take a Subaru Impreza on the trail then don't take the Rav4.

get a nice ifs/irs lift, get some nice mudders like Pro Comp Xterrain or something, and see if there is a locker made for the RAVs diff. that build is xtreme, and if i had more money than sence i would do that to, i like those RAVs, but mine would be soft top.

Frankly, you can take thing ALOT farther than you think w/o a T-case...

I've been way out into the woods in an Outback on trails I'd have fun on in my Runner.

I also used to semi "wheel" my old VW fox. No awd.

It's all about line choice.

Now I wouldn't say that we should all go out and get Rav4's to wheel, I'm just saying with the right driver, you'd be suprised where you can get a "non-4wd" rig...

Cheers

Dave
