Talking Old Toyota 3VZE Advertisement!

My wife was looking through some old magazines she has.. she found this in a 1988 Rolling Stone magazine. I thought it was pretty sweet and figured I'd share with y'all.

Sorry the pics aren't the best.. woulda scanned it but my scanner isn't hooked up at the moment.

Contrary to popular belief, I've had far more problems with my 22R than with my 3VZ-E

That's pretty sweet. Another 3vz owner here. No complaints so far. It has way more power and torque than my 22re did, and gets close to the same miles per gallon.

I'll most likely rebuild it when it blows, unless I can find a good deal on a lexus v8.

Dude! Your wife kicks ass!!! I've been looking all over for that!!!

I've searched far and wide for anything that relates to the 88 3VZE specs. Many things changed with that engine after 88, and I'd like to know what all those things were. I already knew about the 145 hp thing. They later upped that number to 150 hp. How much later, how they did that and why, I can't say for sure. Though I believe, from what I've gathered, that sometime after 88(my guess is 89)they changed the valve clearance specs. Tightening them up by 3 thous. for the intake 2 thous. for the exhaust, thus giving that amount more valve lift for both(better for performance, esp. if you keep them at the tight end of those specs, see below). The ECU is also slightly different after 88, with a greater total pin count and different plugs, and it may have been updated software wise to get the 5 more hp AND, if my other evidence proves true, 9 more ft.lbs. of torque raising it to 189 ft.lbs. I also have some evidence that shows other clearance/tolerances were changed after 88 too. Namely piston ring clearance, connecting rod big end ID, and rod bearing min. thickness. Evidently the big end ID got bigger to fit thicker rod bearings.

My evidence for the valve clearance change after 88 is pretty solid. I have a pic of the sticker under the hood of mine showing it as being different from the current FSM specs.

Valve clearance (Cold):
Intake
0.18 – 0.28 mm (0.007 – 0.011 in.)
Exhaust
0.22 – 0.32 mm (0.009 – 0.013 in.)
http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...68cylinder.pdf
I have the un-edited version of that pic somewhere, it just doesn't show the faded/painted over letters too good in some spots. So I filled them in for easier viewing.

Anybody got a sticker on their 88 that's still readable? I'd like a better pic.

BTW, I have my valves adjusted to current specs. For obvious reasons...

Here's the other piece showing the 88 3VZE specs being 150hp and 189ft.lbs. of torque. But I presume those numbers are the ones released sometime after 88 production had started. So at least late/MY 88 or 89. Who knows?

Edit: More current info, must be from a 95+ T-100 engine manual

Well...there it is in black & white. 9.0-1 Compression, 150 HP and 180 ft.lbs. of Torque.

MudHippy, glad she could help you in your information gathering.

That's very interesting they decided to make some small changes after its initial release. I have always heard the torque is 180 ft.lbs. also, glad to have learned I got that extra 9.

Yeah man... all the old Toyota ads up to 1995 make me feel that way, mostly the ones up to 1989 though since I already have a 2nd gen.

My 3.0 WAS running good. Then a buddy and me were doing some work on it and I got sick, so he decided to finish it himself and screwed it up

I had a fuel leak. Got new injectors and o-rings. Got sick. He decided to fix it himself. Idle went insane. Towed it home to fix myself without him involved. Noticed a fuel smell coming from the engine the next day. Took it in to Toyota to figure out the idle problem and they informed me I had a couple leaky injectors, along with a list of other things.

My guess is he didn't lube the o-rings, and overtightened the fuel rails; just cause he's the type of guy "The tighter the better"

That is cool. I just bought a white version of that truck on Saturday. I flew to Phoenix and drove it back to Albuquerque.

People rip on the 3vze but I have had good luck with them.

I've had lots of 22re's and for about the same gas mileage the 3.0 drives so much better.

Mudhippy: I will see if I can get you a good pic of my underhood sticker.

My new baby:
