It is a good idea to set up the trailer with tires/wheels that will fit on the vehicle towing it. The benefit of this is having two additional spares if push came to shove.

This might be a stupid qestion but how do you go about getting the axle or axle shaft mounting plate to be the same as the Yota. I haven't looked at my trailers lately but wasn't sure if it was just a spindle type or not. I do agree this would be the most prepared way to do it.

i think the problem with that is, most toy trucks and runners are 6 lug and all the trailer hubs i've seen are 5 lug

I saw one yesterday that was in average shape going for $160 with 2 days left from them (expeditionportal) on E-bay. It would need a new set of tires, a new tongue/hitch because it has one of those crappy wal-mart type ball hitches & paint if you're into matching paint jobs. The rust on it would match my old Dodge's

Yeah thats where I was headed with the idea. Though I thought Expeditions West has matching wheels and tires. I'm pretty sure the are 6 lug for that reason. So if adventure trailers can do it so then should you be able too.

The cheapest way to change, is to get a new set of hubs, any good trailer store should have them. They aren't too expensive, they just match them to the size of the axle and you are done. Many people have done it this way. One downside of this, is losing the parking brake, assuming it works in the first place. Mine does! Or use these cool things I got:

MY problem is that I use mine with my taco and the 4runner, so I am going to have to get 16" rims that will work on both. So for right now, the trailer has its own spare.

The other cool thing about the M416, you can download the manual for free from the gov't. still. I printed it up and carry it in a binder when I travel. I have been able to do alot of maintenance on it, that would have been a pain just trying to wing it. The manual even has the wire diagrams, I was able to keep the original wire harness and lights and just switched it to a 4flat pin connector.

If you don't know already, also search ebay for jeep trailer, willys trailer, or bantam trailer. Also trailer with the different branches of the military. That is how I found mine, some one listed it as a USMC 1/2 ton trailer. No one even bid on it, I just kind of stumbled upon it.

I'm working on a trailer right now. when I get further into it I'll start a thread.
I'm using an 89 4x4 that I dismantled (see classifieds for pics)

I plan to cut the frame just behind the torsion bar mounts to make the tounge. I was quoted about 300 for the welding to fab the tongue. The pintle hook is about 50,
Lunette eye 50
other misc parts will be about 200
so the build may be a little more costly than finding a good deal on a m416.

The other issue I have not dealt with is the rear axle. I don't think AZ will allow me to register a new home built trailer with a differential in place...We shall see

In retrospect, the bed trailer is going to be a little bigger than the 416, and may be a PITA to tow on some trails. I prefer to go on longer trips (2-4) days, so having the extra capacity might be nice.

After inspection I plan to re-install the gas tank and pump so I can carry extra fuel too!

Check this site for trailer parts:
