Jerry Can questions

So the other day I can across these two jerry cans for sale and I got them both for $5 each and a spout. They are in great shape, no rust at all and about a 5 gallon capacity. They have screw on caps with a rubber seal on the cap. One of them however is missing the black rubber seal. So I put some fuel in one today and saw when I got home that a little fuel had made its way around the seal. My question is where do you think I could get some new rubber seals. Maybe in the plumbing section at home depot or something or do they need some special seals? Also the one with the seal on it has some paint that has chipped at the bottom of the spout that you can see in the pics, I have a feeling that made the surface for the seal a little uneven and didn't help the leak situation. What kind of paint would you use to fix that? Anyways while we are on the subject what else can you tell me about this type of can? I see that they say USMC on the bottom so I am ''guessing" they are military cans. I have seen that a lot o f guys like the NATO type cans why is that? Are there advantages and disadvantages to each type? Lots of questions I know any info would you have would be great. Thanks.

True Value or Ace Hardware may have rebuild kits for those.

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/ne...askets-597864/ here is a little discussion over this topic. I know I know!..... it's a jeep forum, Don't hate, I just found it through a search engine. Seems like some of them have resorted to cutting their own out of some sort of thick fuel resistant rubber sheets. Any thoughts?

Do most guys use some sort of wrench or special tool to get the cap on really tight on this type of can?

That's what she said! (Sorry...)

For real though, I found a gasket at a local Lowe's that worked for mine.

You wouldn't want to wrench it on. After you've gosselled the hell out of it and it's been in the sun you'll want it to vent if it has too.

Update so, I FOUND SOME! many of them sort of. I resorted to having some made. I found that the ones at the military surplus store weren't really that high quality of a rubber, a little stiff and would eventually fail again probably sooner than I wanted them to. So I now have quite a few for and they are for sale! They are made of fuel resistant nitrile rubber and are slightly softer than the military ones. I am selling them for $3 a piece plus the shipping which shouldn't be over a dollar more. They are the exact shape as the original seal would be just made much much better, remember the are for the screw cap cans. The price could get better if you buy quite a few. Ill probably make an add soon in the market place so keep your eyes open. Feel free to PM me if you would like to buy some. I just put them on my cans and tightened them down and turned the can upside down with NO leaks to speak of! Awesome.

I also found out that you want to use only enamel paint on these cans. It will hold up to the fuel exposure much better. I tried regular spray paint a while back on the spouts and it came right off.

I like how these guys make you buy ten at a time and give you practically no information about their product. Trust me if you need some of these you will be happy with the ones I have for sale. hint hint
