ISR vs Cold Air Intake kit

You guys/girls think our ISR mods are as good as an aftermarket cold air intake? I've done the ISR mod and am more then happy with it especially factoring in the low cost and ease. I'm not looking to by one, but they look to be essentially the same thing. Just looking for some opinions.

I believe that doing the ISR mod is safer than putting an open and exposed filter there, because if you get any sort of water in there, you can ruin your engine. I know a friend that did this with his car, and he had to get rid of it.

Stick as close to factory as possible. I think many of the people on yotatech will share the same opinion. The reason I did my ISR mod was because many of my hoses were cracked, and my idle was irratic.

The replacement part was 60 dollars for my hose, I believe mainly because it is an older truck. I fixed my intake with PVC pipe for about 35 dollars, saving me some cash, and getting some better airflow.

What I would want to consider is maybe putting a nice aftermarket filter in.

Our trucks intake air from behind the headlight and thus have cold air intakes. Those other "cold air...." which locate the filter in the nicely heated engine bay are not intaking very cold air. You'd need to locate the filter somewhere that's exposed to the ambient air stream by way of a hood scoop or something.

Don't buy one of those "hot air intakes". They are all smoke and mirrors. Their power gains ( 1-2hp if that) come from using a filter that infact filters less dirt then the oem paper one. Stick with the ISR mod, you will get the coolest air possible (without a hood scoop like Elripster mentioned) and keep it protected from water.

Well the K&n short ram intake with the plastic tubing shows 5.81Hp gain on the 5vzfe...so is that worth $250.00? I don't know that's up to you. The ISR mod has no documentation but I would guess its about a solid 3hp with a good filter...for like $20.00...also up to you...

I am looking into an icebox from Performaceproducts.com for my 5vzfe it has an enclosed filter and draws air from the fender...its $300+ though so maybe I'll just do the ISR...I am on the fence as of now. Not too many options as far as older motors though...

FYI it does not show this one online...you have to have the catalog...sorry.

The 3VZE has a very small VAFM. It's not that removing other restrictions is a bad thing but if it's the big bottle neck the other mods won't show their full potential.

The silencer itself doesn't look, to me anyways, to be much of a restriction. Seems like the rubber accordion stuff is causing turbulence but the silencer itself only has a small slit in it. At least on my 2000 4runner.

Maybe I'm wrong, I'm no expert, just thinking...
