Interference Motor

Interference Motor
4 runner quit on me, coasted to a stop. Timing belt is not completely disintegrated but definitely damaged, sensor on cover was covered in melted belt. It won’t start I’m thinking it jumped a couple teeth time. It’s a V6, Is it an interference or non interference motor? How do I tell? How can I tell if valves are bent or if motor is shot? Or still good? And what caused it? This thing has a long dirty history of other problems needing fixed- not sure if they contributed to any of this... any advice on best route of repair? I’m a mechanic and do all my own work, but this is the first time I’ve encountered this.

You'll almost always get a better answer with more info- year/model/engine....there are something like 5 generations of 4Runners these days...with a pending 6th gen...
I have a 3rd gen (96-02) 96 4Runner w/v6 (3.4 5vzfe), that is not an interference engine.
Melty belt? Frozen bearing on one of the pulleys?
The next links are for the 5vzfe 3.4 v6...
There's write-ups about, I like http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/timing_belt/
or if you're more visual Timmy the Toolman on you-tube is good

If you're a mechanic you don't need to ask these questions.
Do a compression test after replacing the timing belt. You shouldn't have to worry since both the 3VZ and 5VZ engines are not interference according to the 5 minute google search I did.
