motor locked up, any ideas
Ok guys hope to hear something positive. a few days ago my 88 runner 3.0 started to make a whine and then the motor stopped on the highway. When i finally coasted to the side of the highway i noticed that my harmonic balancer retaining bolt had backed out causing my p/s and alt belt out of alignment. now the bad news I also noticed that the timing pulley on the crank had started to wear its way through the lower timing cover. Have net yet had a chance to open the motor. But my question is what is the safest way to check for valve damage without opening the motor. I don't know yet if the timing belt is damaged or by how many teeth it jumped will open front of motor this week. Asuming that the timing is still ok as far as belt and marks on cams and crank, what would be the best way to tell if i have valve damage before/with out opening motor. this just sucks because I barely did a complete rebuild on my motor 3 months ago. Also is weasy or crower still making cams. from my searches I am unable to see any recent posts for cams on 3.0 and also unable to find any modified cams on net?

As stated this is a non-interference motor so you wouldn't have bent any valves. If the bolt came out and the balancer moved check the crank shaft carefully. It commonly beats up the end of the crank and ruins the keyway in the crank. The crank bolt has to be torqued to about 185 ft./lbs. Common mistake I've seen a lot. By the way it's spelled Albuquerque.

Motor puttered out. But when I initially pulled over and not having the hood up yet I gave it a quick turn of the key, when I had let it crank for about 3-5 seconds (usually starts right up) i heard what sounded like a rattling clicking sound (like rotating/lose metal on metal) only tried this once before popping hood. Thats why I was worried about valve damage. Gonna work on the truck this week hopefully I can have it up and running soon. Thanks for the advice. Yeah Pete sorry about my poor spelling.
