Anyone ever heard of adding acetone to there fuel tank for a increase in fuel mileage? I heard about it on a radio show a few months back (Coast to Coast AM with George Noory) interesting article read on let me know what you think. When added to premium fuel in the quantity of 2.5 ounces per 10 gallons of gas, it improves combustion efficiency and gas mileage by 25% to 35%, But the addition of acetone doesn't work as well with gas that contains ethanol.

10 gallons = 37.85 litres

2.5 ounces = 73.92 milillitres

It's been discussed here before, it'll eat up your gas lines and whatnot. It's bad, and doesn't really do the miracles some people believe it does.

 

Is there any plastics or rubber in the fuel lines?? The guy on the radio program claimed he ran it through his 97 maxima for 2 years and passed the california emmisions test and also took apart his engine to find there was zero build up of carbon or deposits of any kind. The first thing i thought was it will destroy your fuel system too but I'm not so sure, Acetone will definitley eat through cheap plastics such as a pop bottle or oil container But being diluted in that much gasoline. I really doubt you would run into problems in my opinion. unless you know of someone first hand who has tried it? cheers

 

My apologies I have just finished reading the thread on ACETONE.....not sure which way I feel about it though seems pretty mixed opinions.

 

It'll always be mixed. It all boils down to:

a) are you willing to take the risk?
b) is it really worth it?

Whatever you do though, make sure you are educated enough, because whatever happens, you can't say you just did it becuase your dog told you to (if you know what I mean) .

 

I got a little gain and then it levelled off and stayed at 19 mpg with or without Acetone. Still use it occasionally, but mainly as a FI cleaner. About the time it levelled off, El Paso switched to oxygenated gas, so that may have something to do with it since OG is about 10% ethanol.

Most FI cleaners (especially cheap ones) have Acetone in them.

 

Any additive e.g. SeaFoam, FI cleaners etc are risky in older vehicles because they can loosen crud in the tank. I have quit using them all together.

I recently used acetone to clean my fuel injectors (off the truck) and it cleaned them up very nicely...but that was pure acetone and scrubbed with a toothbrush. I can't imagine a noticeable cleaning/mileage effect at such low concentrations in the fuel. Plus I would agree that loosening crud in the tank would be a likely result, and would be bad.

But the real question is is there a legitimate chemical benefit of adding acetone to gasoline to give the claimed mileage improvement. I'm not a chemist, but if it were that easy, everyone would be doing it.

isnt that what the fuel filter is there for? run the tank dry, drop it, vent it and clean it out, do it again, flush it (water?), dry it out, change the fuel filter, reinstall the tank, fill it, start the truck (may take a few tries for the fuel to flow) and you shouldnt have to worry about stuff in the tank. this might be an oversimplification, but you get the idea.

WHAT!?! you'd do all that....

 

i'm not sure about everybody else, but when i dropped the tank on my '79 pickup to put in a new fuel pump, it was bright and shiny, with no crud in there other than some pine needles.

 

if one is concerned that their tank has some sort of foriegn material in it and are anal about things being 'just so', go for it. ill take a few sraped knuckles and change the fuel filter.
