Ignition tumbler problem?

I have a toyota 4runner sr5 2001 and I'm having trouble turning the key past the 12 o'Clock position to get my car started. Usually happens 3+ times a week. It's a pain. I have to get in my car push the brake down and fiddle with the key just to turn the ignition. When I let my mom or brother use the car they usually have problems turning the key. Usually when I bring up the problem to someone they would say that its the steering wheel lock. I know what the steering wheel lock is and I know that's not the case. Funny thing is when I bring my car to the dealer and try to show them the problem the ignition would turn with no problem. I tried replacing my key with a new one and a few months later the problem comes back.

Anybody? help? Should I replace my ignition tumbler? Can I replace that myself? Can anyone get any deals?

What about the brake interlock? There could be a problem with that.

You have to step on the brake in order for the key to turn to start the vehicle. Now if I have misunderstood your exact problem, forgive me, this may not apply.

There is a signal that is sent to the interlock that will allow or not allow the vehicle to start if the brake is or isn't pressed. That might be worth looking into.

Hmm.. That's true it can be a brake interlock problem. But how would I investigate on that?

Download the diagnostic procedure from the TIS (Toyota Information Services) website in PDF form (unlimited downloads for $10 day use fee). Then bust out the needed tools and get to work.

That's about as much as I know about it. There is a safety release on the shift-column that you can stick a key in to over ride the system, but that doesn't exactly solve your problem...

Well my guess could be that its a mechanical problem and something may be wrong with the actual ignition cylinder. You say when you get a new key it helps but only for a few months, maybe this is because after a few months the key is worn down (is this the case?) and it starts to function just like the old one.

The brake interlock doesnt apply because its only for starting the truck, not actually turning the key. I would consider going to the dealer with your registration and ID and getting a key cut to your exact VIN # and trying that out.
