I use 100% Amsoil. I just switched my 04 SE V-6 4Runner over to fully synthetic. I plan on running 25k intervals. I will be getting an analysis done when the Amsoil has 5,000 on it just to get a base line. I bought the truck used and switched to Mobil 1 at 15k.

To the guys running red line oil, be aware it runs out of tbn at 7,500 miles. I will post the oil analysis I had done shortly.

Here

I now run Mobil 1 5w-30 with lexus filters and change them between 5k-6k.

Stop wasting resources. Switch to synthetic and extend your OCI to AT LEAST 7,500k.

Technology has come ALONG way. Oil is no exception.

3k OIC is a waste of your $$$ and our resources.

I put 190,000 miles on an 87 4Runner using Mobil1 and usually 10K to 15K mile changes. Motor was disassembled after a high water crossing hydrolocked and bent a connecting rod. Usually used a Mobil1 or Purolator PureOne filter.

All the bearing surfaces were clean and well within service limits. Cylinders still had the factory hatching pattern. Cleaned a few things up, and sold it to my brother who has now put on another 40K to 50K miles.

My 99 4Runner gets the same treatment. Mobil1 or Valvoline Synpower synthetic, Mobil1 or PureOne filter, OCI somewhere between 10K and 15K miles. Pays easily for itself, as I change oil 1/3 as often as dino squeezin's, and get better fuel mileage.

Synthetics everywhere else as well: transmission, transfer case, differentials, front wheel bearings, power steering...etc.

It's more the time the oil spends in my motor than the miles that makes me a little uneasy since my Eclipse to put 15k on my Eclipse would have taken over 2 years and there's no way I want the same oil in my motor that long but if you put that same 15k miles on your vehicle within a year I guess it wouldn't be so bad. I'm happy with using Mobile 1 syn and a PureOne Filter and changing them at 7-8kmiles.

Question Synthetic in '92 truck with rebuilt engine

Just wondering what you guys think about switching from castrol 10w-30 to mobil 1 or any other synthetic on a 1992 V6 4x4 pickup with 159,000 miles on it. Engine had a full rebuild at 138,000 miles. I've switched over to synthetic in other older cars before and gotten leaks due to synthetic being more viscus.

A lot of peple do say they get leaks after switching to synthetic. I didn't on my two, and I did one at about 75k, and the Runner at about 80k, and neither came up with any new leaks. If you get a leak, fix the thing, is my opinion. It was just a matter of time before anything that started leaking when you switch was going to leak if you hadn't. I am also a firm believer that synthetics are much better for the engine, so why not? Go ahead and switch, fix any leaks that show up, and reap the benefits of using a synthetic. It's a small price to pay, fixing a few leaks.

Warranty....my runner hasnt had one of those in.....oh....16 years maybe? What do yall think about buying the demo trucks, cause thats what mine was, we got it cheaper that way cause it had several thousand miles on it. but have to expect that they did the break in correctly, and took great care of it. Anybody else have a demo vehicle? just wondering.

I can understand where you are coming from. But you are comparing petroleum oil to synthetic. AMSOIL will not break down under any weather changes or if it sits for a long time. See petroleum has sulfur, wax, water and uneven size molecules in it. This is why it breaks down so easily. Synthetic is not pumped from the earths surface like petroleum is. Also, it has to do with your filter. A human hair is 100 microns in width. Most filters only get down to filtering out dirt that is 25-40 microns is width and above. Amsoil filter get down to 7 microns in width and our bypass filters get down to 1 micron in width. Did you know that in a city block there is over 400 cubic tons of dirt and dust that your engine has to breathe and if you are running a cheap filter most of this bypasses your air filter and oil filter. If you want a great article on this just email me. It sure changed my thinking. nooilleak@aol.com

I was talking about synthetic and I still won't run it over 10k and that's partly due like stated in my original post is I only drive about 12k a year and the time the oil spends in your engine can have ill effects, now if I put that 10k on it in a few months then I might go longer but once a year oil changes just aren't for me.

CRUDE OIL has sulfur, wax, water, etc in it. processed oil has very little of any of those in them. all oils are an mixture of chemicals of differening carbon chain lengths. even synthetics. so, if that's the case, then why would your "particle size theory" have anything to do with viscosity or detergent breakdown? "lucy, you got some 'splainin' to do... "

petroleum is not pumped from the earth's SURFACE. c'mon, get it together...

ummm, what exactly is a "cubic ton"???

cubic = implies volumetric measurement
ton = a measurement of mass, not volume

you've got some pretty warped info there. care to back it up?

I'm running M1 10w-30 (it doesn't get freezing cold here in SC) at 6k in between oil changes. At the 3k mark I will change the PITA filter just to be on the safe side and top it off.

I change my oil 3 times a year with Mobile 1 Ow-30. I usually use Holiday's as a reminder to do it. Memorial Day, Labor Day, and New Years.

Has anyone ever sent out there oil sample to BLACKSTONE oil analysis? I usually do for my Ford diesel but I never sent one in for my 4Runner. They offer great info regarding how your oil is holding up and how your motor is doing with air intakes (silicone) and seeing how much gas is mixed in with the oil.

Every 5,000 w/ Mobil1, any more often and you're just dumping out perfectly good oil. It saves me money and it's better for the environment.
