Blackstone reports will show if its worth it or not changing your oil at 3K, 5K or more... Good stuff.

i used blackstone for 2 used oil samples from my tacoma. one at my usual 5000 mile change (i only changed the filter that time, pending sample results) and one at 10000 miles (i went long on that oil based on the results of the first test). both tests indicated that mobil 1 was still doing its job. metals were below average, TBN (lubricity indicator) was above average, and water/antifreeze was zero for both tests. this is no big surprise to me, since the manual indicates 7500 miles for regular driving anyhow. the tests actually indicated that i could probably go to 15000 miles, but i am happy enough with 10000, just an easier plan for me to follow.

imo, the ubiquitous "3000 mile drain interval" is a small part of our national scare syndrome which is making rich people richer and killing plenty of good people (including US citizens) around the world. my 85 4runner manual (its a canadian model) indicates a way longer drain interval than the manual for same year US trucks, like 15000 miles. that was back in 85. think about that, why would a seperate manual be printed for the same truck sold in a different country?

[now decending from soap box]

i'll get around to posting a scanned copy of the test results.

AMEN TO THAT!!! My oil changes too have extended from the 3K mile range to at least 5K sometimes 7K. I am now using Castrol on the 4runner. (5w-30) I believe too that most cars/trucks can extend their oil changes with no ill results and the proof is in the lab reports.

My Ford diesel though I keep around 3K miles due to the high pressures the 6.0 does, it begins to shear the oil. Rotella T is what I use.

in all my cars i always used amsoil or mobil one, but with the truck i decided to give the new quaker state torque power 10w-30 a shot, i gotta say, so far no complaints...and its a full synthetic, something i will never do without...in my opinion conventional just doesnt compare

oh and def atleast every 3000k, i dont care what the oil company says, 3k is plenty, its not like it costs that much or is that hard to do. and ÅÅÅÅ, if it gets me more mileage out of the motor, then its worth it, new oil is always better then old oil

clean

I equate an oil change to a shower (in a loose way). Cleaner is always better. I use Quaker State Q 4X4 10w-40 (10w-30 in winter) right around or below 3000 miles. I like it, but with the new Q high torque stuff, the 4x4 seems a bit rare. I don't trust 5-30, but maybe I'm just paranoid and set in my ways.

I run at least 15,000 miles on Amsoil

Saves me a bunch of money.
Is 5 times less wasteful.
Rewards an oil company that is doing it right.
Saves me 5 times more time and effort.
Toyota loves synthetic.

Everybody wins.

I only put 5k or so a year on my 4runner and I change the oil after any good 'wheeling trip, probably 4 or 5 times a year, way more then necessary probably but you can't be to careful with an offroader and I'm trying to protect my "investment" in all the engine work I had done.

I change mine 3-5k depending on what I am doing. I usually always change it after a long road trip as well. I use Castrol High Mileage cause its always worked fine for me and I've had no issues for atleast 35k miles.

i run castrol gtx 10w30or 10w40 every 3k or so. sometimes I just do an oil change whenever i feel like it or if the oil is dirty enough. if your running synthetic there is no reason to change it for AT LEAST 6K-10K MILES.

I run 20w-50 AmsOil Racing oil year round in my turbocharged 22re. I have a dual filtration system using 2 stock filters and I change the oil every 2000 - 3000 miles.
