hey i just painted my 4runner (olive drab ) and i am going to herculine the rocker panels. any advice on doing this? i am reading the threads about this but i want specific advice. thanks!

I just joined this forum and have been observing for a week or so know. Just bought my first Toyota 4x4, 96 Tacoma and I am loving the holy hell out of it. Had to post because I had bought Herculiner tonight and will be hitting the rockers this weekend, so I saw it only fitting that to post since someone was venturing into the Hootus Herliner Zone, will post before and after picks, anyone know where to pick up "Xylol"?

 

I just fixed some rust in my rear wheel wells and Herc'd the wells and rockers. So far I'm impressed. Once dry, it's tough to scrape off. The down-side: tough to apply to anything not resembling a pick-up bed; especially tough to see where you've gotten good coverage on the 2nd (or 3rd...) coat; dry stuff tends to grab anything brushed up against it - clothing, towels, sponges, etc. My advice: rough-up everything - not a fine sanding job, but a wire-wheel-on-an-out-of-control-grinder-job; Get extra brushes (the cheapos do fine as long as you pull out the loose bristles before you start) and rollers (I got some small-diameter trim rollers from Sutherlands. If you don't have Sutherlands, try Pay-Less or anyplace that carries Dutch-Boy products. The texture was similar to the roller covers included with the kit. Roller covers made for texturing walls & ceilings don't work - they just fling Herc. everywhere.); make sure you have good adhesion on any masking tape - the xylene base product will seep into very small cracks.
