Help, Need better options to rebuilding engine, 87 4-runner, a crate engine, etc?

The diagnosis from the dealership, is that to rebuild the engine in my '87 4-runner is going to be $3400. It is torn apart at their shop now.

I am looking for anyone in Calgary Alberta who has suggestions/better options. I have gotten some advice, that putting a new crate engine in it may be cheaper, if I can find someone to do it.

Suggestions? Contacts? Anything..please.

My Runner came with a Remanufactured engine from Jasper. 3 years 75K waranty and a company that does stand behind its products.

Do a search on them they have a pretty good web site. The one I have has 15K on it and running strong.

From Calgary and sporting an Oilers avitar...shame!

Back on topic:
Do you have a 3.0 or 4cyl(guessing 3.0). If so, I've heard its not to tough to swap in a Chevy 4.3L V6. And I know there are a few for sale around town. check 4wheeler.ca in the Forsale

Before you decide on changing anything, I suggest you talk to Mike at 4xToys(near Lethbridge), he runs a Toyota Graveyard. He's got a really good inventory, has good prices, and is a great guy to deal with. Plus he makes regular trips up to Calgary, so he can deliver. He could probably hook you up with a used 3.0 for a whole lot cheaper than $3400. I think he was selling a complete 3.4 w/ 120K on it for $1200

22RE swap, 3.4L swap, chevy 4.3L or chevy 350 smallblock swap. If your not concerned with mpg then I highly suggest you drop at least the 4.3L in thier or the V8, lifted, locked and running 35's will be easy.

A jasper reman is a good engine, they stand behind them 100%.

I'm from Calgary.........I just had my 89 with a 22RE rebuilt a month ago - oil pump decided to explode. I had it done at Auto Masters - 403-233-7323, ask for Dan. They did an awesome job, but it took longer than I expected; he is a smaller shop but deals with toyotas exclusively. The bad news..... $3750.
