Help me choose: 235/85 10 ply vs 265/75 6 ply

I didn't have much luck on my last thread, but I'm choosing between the 2 sizes and thicknesses in regards to some Nokian Hakka LT's. Since they are snow tires, whatever I decide I'll have to live with for 3-4 years so I want to choose right. The 235's are relatively pizza cutters and I think will cut through the snow much better but since they are 10 ply they might ride really rough. The 265's are still a bit heavier but being 6 ply will ride better. However, I found they were too wide for thick snow and made the 4runner float around a lot. Any opinions or experience?

where are you determining your plys from? Is it 10 overall or sidewall?

Im guessing its overall..so that may mean 3 side wall, 2 steel and 5 polyester?

If you are going strictly snow, get pizzacutters. Are you going to be running these in the summer too?

These will be winter only tires. I believe you are correct on the ply's, I think the extra 4 plys are all on the tread face. Pizza cutters look a bit dumb but I'm not buying for looks, I'm buying for functionality.

I have 235-85-16 tires on my 98 and I love them. I know most people on the board opt for the wider tires, but I like my skinny tires. They are slightly taller than the 265 and have less rolling resistance. I can honestly say that I don't notice much difference in ride quality with the 10 ply tire. They sound like exactly what you want for a winter tire.

another option you have is 255/85/16 they are only 10" wide and they do really good in the mud, no snow in texas.

Thanks for the input guys. I would be quite interested in those 255's but unfortunately the Nokian snow tires are a bit limited in sizing. I'm really leaning towards those 235's after reading Trollcruiser's post. I have been really let down with the snow performance of the 4runner compared to my 85 Chevy 1/2 ton I previously ran, which just had some Cooper AT's. I'm hoping that the narrow tires do the trick!
