HELP: bad HG or timing cover leak?
hey recently ive been having an issue with my 82 4wd (22R) getting a bit warm when driving (little past halfway on the gauge, consistently, ambient temp doesnt matter). i was half a gallon low on coolant this morning and it wasnt on the ground.
the prior owner to me had replaced the upper end gaskets he said but he did a crap job so the timing cover area leaks bad and on top of the cover theres always oil and i think some comes from the front main as it trails all the way back to my trans.
anywas the other day i noticed the oil on the cover now has a slight green hue (uh oh) and a dipstick check looked like a lighter oil (diluted maybe) which was weird as i need to change the oil but had just topped it off, so it shoulda been dark. dipstick fluid consistency was odd, you can tell it is like 90% oil but as you rub ur fingers together it kind of "sticks" like theres water in it.
basically does this sound like a HG prob and if so would a compression test find it? truck runs like it always did and doesnt blow coolant smoke like if a water jacket had broke on the HG. is there any place in the timing cover where it can leak?
also, i started it up this morning and as i revved it, i could hear that low rumbling (bearing dry) noise at around 2000 rpm (hood open, using manual throttle cable maipulation @ the carb), so i didnt drive it. any thoughts/ideas?
ill change the oil tonite or tomorrow, and report back any new findings. im thinking i may be giving engnbldr a call soon for one of his gasket set and timing chain kits and possibly an oil pump.
