Getting my truck painted...

Alright so I have a 94 PU and I have scratched the living hell out of this truck from four wheeling and put a couple of dents in it one in the bumper and on back right next to the tail gate.

Now my question to yall is, for whoever has had their truck or any vehicle repainted, how much did it cost? I'm thinking about using some of my money form my tax return to have my truck repainted. Also, where did you go? A small local place? Or a big corporate place like maaco?

Thanks

All depends on what you want and what quality level you're looking for. Maaco or Earl Sheib will have some pretty cheap prices sometimes if you just want a cheap paintjob and some overspray is OK. I would guess that a paintjob like "Flamed4x4" could have been 5 figures. Some places will allow you to do some of the prep yourself, and you can save a bunch of money.

All of it is wasted if you go wheeling again though!

Yes, a good paint job will run you into the thousands. What with materials and labour. Macco and places like that are a "get what you pay for" kind of thing.

ever heard of tread lightly, or stay on the designated trail? thats why stuff gets closed off. It might not be a big deal where you live but here in CO we turn your ass in for that stuff.

It wasnt closed off, and there was deffinately a trail there at some point, just the bushes had gotten bigger and began to cover the trail.

Also, anyone ever got their truck rhinolined, the whole thing, from head to toe? Any idea how much that costs?

BlingTaco has the lower part LineX/RhinoLined. It's kinda bumpy - not sure how that would look over the whole vehicle! Sure is durable though...

I talked to a guy tonight who wheels in a Jeep. He told me that for his last paint job he went to a place that paints garage floors. The charged him what the charge to do a floor: $150 + paint. Now his ride is painted that color with the speckles in it. He's says its durable.

Just paint it yourself. I'm a painter and it's not too hard to get the hang of it. You'll fare far better with a cupgun than you will with a spray can. The fan between a rattle can and cupgun are two different worlds. All you need is some sandpaper, a masking machine, a cupgun and compressor, and a few practice runs... Just keep a wet line and it should be good. Then you can paint your buddies rigs when they need it done... do you know how sore your finger would be after rattle canning a whole truck?

I'm not sure it would be easy to get a good job with the spray cans as it would probably be hard to keep a wet edge (since the fan is only 2" (maybe). You would probably get lines in the sheen... a cupgun though, FAST & EASY, wide fan... and good to know how to do anyway.

Jeremy, I'm getting ready to paint my truck sometime in the near future, and I'm looking for some flat black paint to spray in my cheapie Harbor Freight spray gun. Where should I look? (cheaper the better, its a trail rig) And how much do you think I would need to cover my truck? How many coats should I do? And should I thin it down with paint thinner before putting it in the gun? What ratio thinner to paint?

Sorry for the hijack!

Yep, Maaco or Schieb does pretty good for the price really, $300 -500 depending. You can hardly buy primer and paint and reducers and misc supplies for that, assuming you have a compressor and gun and know how to use it.
A really good paint job will run a few thousand.
And yes, the Flamed truck paint job would run 5 figures all right - there is 3 grand in paint alone on it...

There have been some threads on rhinolining a whole truck, bottom line is it would weigh like 400 lbs. That's not good.

Spray can paint jobs really suck. Too large an area (you can't keep a wet edge,) they aren't properly glossy (they look dull,) and they don't last long (Uv and the weather eat em up quick.) And it would take $200 worth of cans anyway...
I know a guy who sprayed his trail truck with Rustoleum in dark gray. Not bad at all, for a beater trail rig. (He used a gun, not rattle cans.)

Adam - at least go with a semigloss (or semiflat - same thing) as flat paints aren't weather resistant - they don't seal out the elements. They don't last long and rust starts under them very quickly.

I had mine done at a really top notch shop. I think for body work (dent removal) and the paint was a little under 2K, but I spent more doin other cosmetic stuff.
