VERY VERY rare.

The 4.56 w/diff lock was only in the 4cyl trucks, and essentially had to be special ordered.

I see one on www.car-part.com for $350 - 4.56 ratio. I'd call and make sure on that gear ratio (says it's out of a 96 4Runner). Also make sure you search for "carrier" on the part search and not differential - this way yuo can specify gear ratio.

Assuming it's the one listed at AAA Auto Salvage in High Point, NC, I spoke to them. They are clueless and don't know if it has an electric motor or not. I would love to have bought it for $350 but I got so frustrated with the guy that I just told him thanks and hung up.

Btw, Inchworm sells them new from the factory with 4.56 for $925 and you can probably get that price, or close to it, from a local dealer. I'm probably going this direction for 2 of them (front and rear). At least this way I will know what I'm getting!

Ya, I would also say the chances are slim to none. I know a guy here who searched far and wide for one and went through like 3 purchases then found out it was not a 4.56. Finally he bought a new one from inchworm. I looked for quite a while as well and ended up going with a used 4.30. IMO the ratio difference is not that much of a difference for all the hassle or extra price; to me at least.

Yeah a lot of those guys are pretty much clueless on the finer details... like gear ratio and if it has a locker. I was sent the wrong diff when i purchased my e-locker from an out-of-state salvage yard. I had to do a little convincing to the guy that there is a difference between a diff with a locker motor and one without. Eventually it worked out and he sent me the correct one.

Maybe there is someone in NC that could check it out for you.

Thanks for the heads up

I'll probably end up ordering one from dealer (ONLY if price is reasonable after a 25% discount I can manage)

but then, have any of you ordered the locker/a 3rd through the dealer? just as a real quick question, what kind of package/parts would i be getting?

Take a look at this link, it has the part numbers at the very bottom:

http://carterswebsite.com/4runner/mods/locker/

You should also look at Marlin Crawlers website. If you look under Products and then Differentials, there are three different links to good articles on the subject.
