You are still on ifs right? You can't put it up front on ifs. It'll have to go in the rear.

$150 is a very good deal. I paid $450 for mine.

As always, the lower the gear ratio, the more critical the setup.

www.gearinstalls.com

Where the hell do you wheel that you NEED 40's? Must be a helluva a mall ....

I have 5.71's in the trail truck (SAS on 35's). I can tell you they are stronger than the stock Birfs...

Check out the AZ chapter of TTORA. Not many folks there are running tires that big and they do some of the gnarliest trails out there. Do some research, talk to captkirkyota on TTORA. 40's on Toyota axles is not a good idea.

Do you have lockers in both ends yet?

In order of preference:

Two E-Lockers,
Put the one you have in the rear, then look for the high pinion e-locker to put in the front.

One E-Locker/ One Open
Put the E-Locker you have in the rear.

One E-Locker/One Welded
Put the E-Locker you have in the front (so you can steer), and weld the rear.

Some people say the 5.71s are weak..., but as expressed earlier, they are really plenty strong, and just as strong as 5.29s. A good setup can make a big difference, particularly cap bearing preload on the ring gear side (to minimize deflection).

i would sugest putting the locker in the rear leaving the front open and learn to wheel it. i dont know of any one who had 40's at TTORA TO and the ran some extramly gnarly trails, at most the bigest was 37's or 38's i think if you are running trails with a completly open dif truck and clearance is TRUELY your only problem with 35's you sir have some awsome driving skills

The AllPro buggy and Action Jackson's buggy had 39" Krawlers, but I don't think anyone else had over 37's...

for those in the know, i did john bull and holcomb creek with my rig, last weekend. no locker, no sliders, 33 inch tires.

you can do alot more than you think you can just by choosing the right line, and having alot of confidence in your vehicle and the people spotting for you.

If you don't have a locker in the rear yet, put it in the rear. That's a no brainer.

If you put it up front, plan on blowing up stock birfelds, or shell out $700 for longfields.

Well, not exactly. In my experience, the FRONT locker makes more difference than the rear, but yes there are more drawbacks (steering in particular).

I'm amazed by the number of people who seem to espouse that the minute you install a front locker that the CV's or Birfs will spontaneously explode. This is simply not true. There are a number of instances where having a front locker will control the wheelspeed much better and LIMIT the potential for damage.

Not in his case. He said he was going to 40's. 40's with stock birfs and an elocker WILL explode birfs.

My point is 40's on stock birfs with or without a locker he's gonna blow stock birfs, not because he has a locker or not.

I wrote the post more for the people in the future who have reasonable ideas about tire sie that may come across this in a search.
