So I have been searching both this forum and TTORA and people here seem to think a diff drop is a good thing when running more then 3" lift. But over at TTORA it seems like everyone says they are a waste of time and money for something that really does nothing. They say it make vibrations in the front end, it doesnt really drop the diff just change the angle.
I dont know if i should put it on now?

 

Find someone who trust personally and ask them...and stop listening to the masses as most of them are web wheelers anyway and couldn't figure out how to install a diff drop if they bought one.

 

lol, amen! however, i guarantee this thread is going to turn into a huge debate. the logic of the diff drop as discussed over at TTORA makes no sense to me. dropping the diff by an inch makes your angles go down, simple as that. i have one and have no vibrations. just my personal opinion/experience

 

I have one installed, and I can tell you that a "1 inch diff drop" does NOT drop your diff by an inch. If you look at how it goes in, it rotates the diff a bit so you don't get a straight vertical drop from it. But you do get some drop and that is better than none. Its cheap insureance so get one and rest easier. And I don't think you should be lifting IFS 3" to begin with. You are gonna have problems with your CVs with or without a diff drop with 3+ inch of lift.

 

ah yes i forgot to mention about the rotation versus just dropping it vertically an inch, but youre right, any little bit helps. however, i dont agree with the not lifting IFS 3". I have 3-4" of IFS lift done by longer coilovers and I wheel it and have yet to break a CV

 

 

Your ball joints are going to be over extended and leaking with 3" of lift.

 

HELL NO!!!! Anything that has any chance of hangin' lower than need be and foulin' up my ground clearence is OUT OF THE QUESTION.

 

Do The Lift. Then Look At The Cv Angles Before And After And Tell Me If You Really Want Them Running Like That?

If It Doesn't Bother You That's Fine... But Be Prepared For Boot And Joints To Be Breaking.

 

this does not affect ground clearance, the diff is still tucked under our skid plates on tacomas and 3rd gens...

 

I was not aware of that. I do know it would be an issue on my rig. And it would spoil my plan for a truss in that area, if I so desire.

 

This was something I definatly noticed when i did my diff drop. It pivoted the back end of my diff down and inch which probably lowered the axle locations by 1/2 and inch. To truly drop the diff you need to cut out the frame mounts and weld in now mounts with an inch if plate about them.
