decoding your vin

ok, iv been looking around and havent found a very complete VIN decoder or one you dont have to pay for so i decided to start my own in the hopes of figuring out exactly what my VIN stands for. it may not be complete in some areas or some items may not fit your vehicle. i came along this problem as well. but heres what i have:

VIN Position and meaning

1--world manufacturer id
2--manufacturer
3--vehicle type
4--vehicle description
5--engine model/series
6--chassis series #
7--body type or passenger restraint system
8--model
9--check digit
10--model year
11--plant and location
12--
13--
14--
15-- VIS (vehicle identifier section) or serial code for vehicle
16--
17--

my VIN

J - japan
T - toyota
4 - truck
V - 2 door ext cab 1/2 ton
N - 3.0 V6 efi 3VZ-E
1 - undetermined
3 - manual belts w/ 2 air bags (my truck does not have air bags)
G - xtra long xtra cab SR5
1 - my vin is verifiable
k - 1989
5 - japan TMC plant (Toyota Manufacturing Company)
0
0
7
9
3
8

here's the decoder, it should work somewhat with vehicles other than toyota (only works for 89 year and up vehicles):

JT4RN61

The only thing correct about that compared to my VIN is that my truck was built in Japan, its a Toyota and it was built in 85, other then that its all wrong.

not sure about the JT4 but RN61 stands for:

R = R-series engine (22R-E)
N = Hilux/Tacoma/4Runner/Hilux Surf Code
61 = vehicle model series

also, is that really the VIN? it seems to be too short. but RN61 is the vehicle model code

I didn't put the whole VIN, I know what the letters and numbers mean, they just don't match on his chart.

maybe that's because what you have is the old VIN system which incorporated the vehicle code. in most of asia, that type of VIN is not called a VIN but rather a chassis/frame number

oh yea sorry guys, this only works for the 89 and up vin numbers. pre 89 vins are configured in a completly different way. the positions mean different things and there is actually a different set of numbers for the model

this site should help those with pre 89 vehicles:

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/vin/

agian sorry for the mishap

Is there a position that would tell if the vehicle is a california or 49 state emissions vehicle? You've got to love this state with all its wonderful laws.

click on parts reference and select your car, it's not an actual decoder.

On your list there, z indicates the vehicle was built in the "Vermont" plant, but on the pdf you posted, it indicates built in the "Fremont" (Cal.) plant. Did I read that wrong?? Wasn't aware that Toyota had a plant in Vermont, I learn something new today......

so once I'm in the parts how could I get the emissions ratings. Sorry I'm asking so many questions. I've looked around and sometimes I think I'm blind. Thanks for all your help.

I'm not sure if it will tell you or not on the emissions ratings, but isn't that listed on the underhood emissions label anyway?

while I am thinking about it, you might be able to go to the autozone website and look up there vacuum diagrams and decipher based on what components you have under your hood which emissions you have.

I'm looking at buying a vehicle and I've got the vin number and the hood has been replaced. If it is a ca emissions I can register it in california, if not I get to keep looking.

the vehicle your buying isn't in cali I presume?

I would call a dealership and ask them, they might be able to tell you.

No the car is in arizona. I live pretty close to the border so this happens fairly frequently. The guy says it's a cali spec but I want to double check. It would be a serious downer to buy a car and not be able to register it.
