cv change help, do I need lube?
I have a 94 p/up and am changing my driver side half shaft. I was wondering if it is necessary to lube the outer shaft of the cv before sliding it into the spindle? I read somewhere that it needs to be lubed, but the guy at the shop said it didn't need to be, so I didn't. Does it, or does it not? Also, I am planning on doing the bolt replacements for the diff side. I bought the M12x1.25x30mm bolts and nuts, but I am worried that it might come loose atonly 61lbs/ft. Would using threadlocker make the nuts too tight to remove later or is it recommended? Without threadloccker, what are the chances of the bolts coming loose. Thanks in advance for taking time to help.

Just went through this myself:
I have replaced both sides, and never lubed the end and had no problems. The guy that was helping me was a mechanic, had done several, and didn't mention it.
I replaced the studs with bolts. I used grade 10 metric even though the studs weren't marked. I got them as tight as I could with a normal sized socket, sorry - didn't use a torque wrench, so don't know how tight. I went and checked them the other day, and they were still very tight. Loctite blue certainly wouldn't hurt though! Regardless, I ALWAYS check any bolts after driving it a bit.
While you're under there, be sure to check the 4 bolts on the end of each driveshaft! (14mm - need two end wrenches, sockets and ratcheting wrenches won't fit!)

yes, there is a bearing surface on the stub shaft that rides inside the spindle, that needs some grease.
dont worry about threadlocker, that would defeat the purpose of the quick change. i never had any trouble with mine coming loose

the fsm says to use molybdenum disulsulphide lithium base grease, but I can't find that in stores. What is it, or what else can I use. Also, I bent the c clip open a little, and it doesn't sit flush in the groove, but seems to hold the shaft fine from backing out. SHould I replace it, or will it be okay as long as the shaft doesn't back out. Thanks again for the help

I would replace the c-clip with a snap ring. The holes will make it MUCH easier to remove using snap ring pliers.
If you can't find molydisulphide grease, you need to find a new store (probably don't have it at the grocery store LOL)
