I have a 94 4Runner with 22re. It has had a knock for 3 years (probably wrist pin, I'm told), that has been well managed with 2 qts Lucas at each oil change. Recently, it threw the water pump belt, engine overheated, but never redlined, and someone convinced me I needed a new head gasket (without planning the head - dumb I know). Oh-la-la, should have gone with just the belt first, to see. It runs, but has low compression (90's in 3 and 4). Cylinders looked great, pistons very clean for 210k.

My questions; Can a mechanically inclined guy, having only swapped out a beetle long block, install a rebuilt 22re long block? What do I need to have (tools), and what manuals would be essential to get the job done? And, not knowing when the clutch was last replaced (I'm second owner of a well taken care of Toy, with 50k on my end), replace the clutch disk while swapping blocks?

What I would do on break down is clearly label everything, package it up, number it, and then reverse the order during install. Voila! I can take video also. I still get 2 year 24k warranty, assuming they don't find a way out.

It is better to have help for when your pulling and installing the engine just makes it so much easier.

Agree with the above. Be careful, have the Haynes and OEM service manual, document everything and go for it.

 

Especially if you have CRS like me.
You didn't mention whether it's the DD, which might tend to make you rush.
If I had the cash a Long Block, that's what I would have done, so except for block out and block in I did the same on my 91 P/U,
asking plenty questions and using this great resource here.
Document everything, make use liberally of the digital camera and lots of gallon zip lock freezer bags w/ sharpie pen.
Keep it clean, makes it a lot easier.
The Haynes manual turns out has some shortcut/overlooked issues which can all be answered here.
Wish the FSM had pictures instead of sketches.
Buy a torque wrench and penetrating oil and use them.

Sure was a pain repinning all those plugs
