camry startup question.....?????

Sorry everyone for the camry question (please move it if need be).
My girlfriend owns a 1999 toyota camry, and whenever she starts it in the morning (or whenever it is started cold) the rpm's will stay up around 2000-2200 revolutions. as soon as it is taken out of park and driven, it drops to normal.
a sensor maybe? i really have no idea, and don't know how bad of a problem it is, but i figured i'd ask. Thanks for any help

2k RPM's sounds a little high, but you do understand its normal for any car to have high rpm's on a cold startup? Its an air valve called a idle air control. You should get a manual and see what the RPM is supposed to be on a cold start, if its too high replace the idle air control valve.

Thats correct for the car. On cold startup, the car should idle high while it warms up and gets the fluid circulating and the engine warmed up.

Putting the car in gear puts a load on the system, thus dropping the RPM's down.

If you let the car warm up for a few mins, the idle will drop down.

My 2004 Camry also idles at approx 2000 rpm (maybe 1800) when it's really cold out. I don't think it's abnormal.

My 93 Corolla idles about 1600 when cold, and idles down as she warms up.
