Buying first toyota

Im 18 and my current daily is a 2002 silverado 2500hd and the gas mileage is killing me so i wanna buy a 2nd gen runner as a cheaper daily and for an offroad truck to go places a fullsize truck will struggle with ( not looking at 1sts or 3rds just not really a fan of them i prefer 2nds) and cant decide 2 door or 4 door and 22re vs v6 (if i did get the v6 id like to drop in a 3.4 as soon as possible)
I kinda like the look of 2 doors better but the only ones i see near me are v6s
Im really wodnering if buying a 22re is better than 3.4 swapping a v6
Also does the 2 doors slightly shorter wheelbase have any real advantages to light offroading? Im new toyotas and usually only go places a fullsize truck can go.
sorry if this is in the wrong place if so feel free to tell me where to post

Welcome To Yotatech

Be nice to know what part of the world you live in??

Drive a 22re then drive a 3.4

You might want to read through the 3.4 Swap section

I can`t stand my 22Re vehicles even for the 5 mile commute to work I keep thinking something is locked up

2 Door second generations seem pretty rare I have only seen a few of them in my part of the world

One of those things if you need a 4x4 you just put in the fuel and pay when the bill comes .

With my 4 Runner every few months I would need to remove the 1500 pounds of welding cable and other assorted parts that seem to breed in the dark of the night

As long as the vehicles I drive get between 10 to 14 mpg I think all is well

I read about people getting all kinds of mileage but I can only see what I deal with

You want fuel economy get one of those tiny cars

I've borrowed my FIL's 2011 Chevy 1500 a number of times and I think you'll be very disappointed with the Toyota's lack of power.

If you're really interested in fuel economy, check out fuelly.com. It gives a more realistic picture than the EPA estimates. In that site, you can see that a 2nd gen with a v6 gets nearly as poor economy as your 2500. The 22re's get slightly better.

My rebuilt 22re gets up to 23 mpg cruising the highway at 70 mph. I haven't gone through a full tank with off-road use since the rebuild, but mixed use gets 18 mpg. This seems higher than most so don't expect these numbers, either.

On the plus side, some trails will be easier and more fun with a smaller, lighter vehicle. That's probably all the gains you can expect.

Nothing about these trucks is efficient, the best reason to get one is that they are lite enough to go places big trucks can't and are generally tough to kill if you take care of them (a labor of love)!

No one is really answering the question lol
i get theyre not honda civics in terms of efficiency but im positive it will have a significant gain over a v8
Im only wondering 2 door vs 4 door and 22re vs 3.4 swap

Well, there's a problem with the question you're asking.

In the U.S. the 2 door was only sold in 1990 and wasn't popular, which makes finding one for sale almost impossible. Is there one in your area up for grabs? I've never seen one in my life and can't find any for sale online during the national search I just ran.

Also, have you actually driven a 2nd gen with a 22re? Even if a standard 5 speed you might think something's broken, but nope, that's just the legendary 22re powering a ~4000 lb suv. You might find it acceptable, but I remember being 18 and wanting to go fast. The higher-mileage engines you're likely to find for sale will be even slower and the more you push it, the worse the mpg. See what I'm getting at?

You'll realistically only be looking at 4 doors with a 3.0 that you plan to swap with a 3.4. It sounds like a great plan to me if you want to get more into 4wheeling, but I don't see another realistic option to choose from. Hope that helps.

Toyota 4cyl trucks are dogs. My 2013 2.7 5spd cant get out of its own way, my brother's 2004 auto 3.4 would of ˟˟˟˟ all over it. They are perfect for putting around town and if your commute does not have a lot of hills, but you will be disappointed once you try to pass someone without a running start.

What engine is in your 2500? What kind of commute do you have?
