Brass union fitting for rear diff?

So i was at a local hardware store looking for some things to repair a screen from my porch and i was looking at various bolts and bracket and i saw union fittings made of brass. They're for bathroom fixtures i'm guessing, but could they be used as a union fitting on the rear diff. for an extention? As long as i get the same pitch and thread type would there be any problems? They were also only $1.69 each. Has anyone ever tried this or seen these in hardware stores. Thanks for your info.

Yeah, the WATTORA diff breather mod post, which I can't find, uses just that. The piece from Toyota is $5.

Those fittings you were looking at probably were not "metric".

P.S. Those of you who are so cheap you can't go buy a properly sized metric fitting so you can save $2.00 are KILLING me.

I used 1/8" pipe fitting per the 4crawler writeup, but I'm a little anal, so I chased the threads with a tap...

I use a 1/8" NPT to 1/4" barbed fitting from the brake section at Canadian Tire that cost me $2.99 per fitting.... So I would assume that any auto parts store would have the same....

Diff breather

If I have time today to finish the write up on my board I'll take some pics... Wifes car needs some TLC... I would like to thank 4Crawler for ALL the great information on his site. Without it I would have been lost as to what I needed for this mod......Well maybe not lost, but I probably wouldn't have had a clue as to what was going on when I drove in water.... Thanks again....

It's not that i'm cheap... well, ok i am, but if it fits why not go for it? Plus the closest dealer is like 30 min. away and i'd have to go and order it, then go and pick it up. And it'll take a couple days for it to get here if i order online. I'm off tommorrow so i gotta find something to do.Thanks for the replies.

get a cheapie fitting for the end - a PCV breather works fine. for the end by the diff, get a pair of pliars and simply rip the little metal cap off. ripping it off takes the "valve" part of the breather off and then what's left behind becomes your pre-installed union. use some hose clamps to secure the FUEL GRADE hose to the union on the diff and to the PCV that you route up near your gas cap.

10 minutes and $5 later you have an extended rear diff breather.
