Best year to buy a 4wd diesel 4runner

Hi y'all, I'm looking into buying a 4wd standard trans, turbo diesel 4runner for light off roading and towing cross country. Would like to add some suspension lift to it if the vehicle I get is stock but nothing crazy. I'm mostly looking at doing trail rides. No serious rock crawling. Anything to look for or watch out for would be appreciated. Thanks.

Going to be pretty hard finding a turbo diesel if you are in the USA. 22re (very few turbo) and 3vz were the only engines provided here. so you will have to do the swap yourself or find one that has had it done already.

Oh really? I've got a Chilton manual that said they made diesels in the USA and Canada.

There were usa diesel modles of first and second gen pick ups and first gen 4runners. Ive only seen 1 84 diesel pick up for sale locally. But the techs that have been around said they used to have to do injector pump re times all the time from people messing with them trying to get more power.

So the diesels aren't as powerful as maybe I'm thinking? I'd really like to find a factory second gen 4runner if I have to go to canada to get one I'd do that.

According to everything I can find, there has been no diesel 4runners available in the USA and diesel pickups stopped in 86. Turbo diesel pickups were only available for 1 maybe 2 years in 85/86

All that is true. Now if you want a diesel in a 4runner get one with the 1KZ-T(E) swapped into it. That is a 3.0L 4cy diesel that is power wise about like the 3.4L V6 but with better mileage. Plus you can soop them up some. I knew one that sold in Texas about 2-3yrs ago for around $9k.

There's one in Houston right now on ebay for 6000. And it's all modded out and jacked up. Only problem being I'm not ready to buy yet
