Best Toyota MPG EVER thread

What is the best MPG your Toyota truck, or SUV has EVER got?

Be sure to list if you have any mods, like ISR, headers, exhaust, gears, etc, and what kind of rig, and engine, and tranny. And specify MPG, and mileage.

I've had a few wheeel/tire combos and have watched my gas mileage regularly mostly because previous to owning my truck I came from a honda background (Civics, CRX's, preludes, and Accords) Oh, and my most previous vehicle was an E36 325is. I'm not making much money at the current time and with gas prices rising drastically I've considered ditching the toyota and going back to a honda. Fact is, I love my truck so much that I have decided to just make some sacrifices and keep it till either someone hits me and totals it out or I flop it.

Anyhow, here's how I got it:109K Bone stock with all maintenance kept up with ( new clutch, valve job, new timing chain and guides, spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, etc.) It had 16" Steel tundra wheels with 255/70 16's Dayton timberlines on it. (about a 30x10) It got about 20 MPG on average. I then cranked the torsions and got some 32" BFG AT's on 3.75 backspaced steel wheels. I was amazed at how much of a difference in driveability and gas mileage there was. I got an average of maybe 16 MPG's. My most recent setup consists of SR-5 Alloys with 31x10.5 Treadwright green diamond OTR's. They're technically a retreaded mud tire with commercial grade diamonds molded into the tread blocks providing an almost studded tire performance but they've been great so far and at around $400 a set shipped the price was right. In the harsh wisconsin winters they've really impressed me. With this setup I'm reading about 18, maybe 19 on average. Not too much of an increase but driveability has been noticeably better (a useable 5th gear on the highway) and with winter gas I'm sure the summer months will be a little more forgiving in the MPG department. Also, as a sidenote I have my hubs locked during winter most of the time so I can shift in and out of 4WD on the fly. Without the hubs locked there seeems to be a small difference in consumption. I presently have about 138K on it and I'm looking at running a seafoam treatment and maybe some more maintenance (synthetic driveline fluids, injector treatment, and another valve adjustment.) Oh, and this is all with stock 4.10 gearing.

Sorry for the novel, I got a little carried away with specifics but I figured I'd give my 2 cents on my experience.

I've decided that this summer I will, if money permits be buying a Suzuki SV650 to have fun with and commute on. Not to mention get at least three times what I'm currently getting in gas mileage and save a little loot.

Tonight, I got 23 MPG(actually 22.7, but I round up). Before tonight, my best MPG was 21, and that was on my last tank of gas. Before that even, my best was about 20

I achieved the epic 23 MPG with stock gearing(4.30, or 4.10, I forget), 31-10.50 tires, 3.0, 5speed, mostly unloaded 4runner, and 90% highway, and 10%city, and even a little bit of 4X4, too. I did run some injector cleaner through my last tank, and got 21, but today, I got 23, and I am happy!!!

when i got my truck it was near stock, it was with 31x10.50 bfg a/t and a 2.25 exhaust that started about 2 feet off the manifold and my best tank was somewhere around 19. Now with the mods i have listed in my sig my best was about 18mpg and it averages between 14-17, depending on what kind of driving i am doing.

I will be swapping some highway tires on my second set of wheels for my 93.

I had a few Tacomas w/ the 2.7 3.58 gears and 5 speed, so those may have done even better but I never checked back then.

Best I have ever calculated was in my 2000 2.7 5 speed 4Runner w/ 4.56 gears and stock 265/70/16, only mod I had were billsteins. Driving across NY state with 3 people and gear plus my dog using a/c the whole way and cruising 70-75 I got 24.7 mpg through one tank. My truck had about 16k at the time. My bro in law was behind me in his V10 Excursion and managed about 11 for the same drive, of course they had 2 more people.

The best I've gotten so far was about 30mpg. My major mod is I put a turbo diesel in. Around town I get about 22mpg but that is due to the stupid auto box. The mileage should go up in it as I've got an actual really clean new K&N coming for it (only got it because its all I could get for the truck) and I plan to intercool it down the road. Its got a 3 inch straight pipe from the turbo back so no breathing problems other than the dirty air filter right now. 300000kms on it.

The best MPG's I've ever gotten was 30 "Imperial" mpg's while driving through the mountains before I got the lift and tires. Drive speed was between 90-110 km/h or (apprx. 55-65 miles per hour).

I actually got 27 "Imperial" mpg pulling our tent trailer through that same stretch 2 years ago, doing the same speed.

That's with my 1997 3.4 4runner.

Cheers

best ive gotten is about 26.5/27mpg on the highway. drove from san diego to vegas on a single tank. engine is all stock, except a timing chain that was replaced about 2 years ago, and so far is giving me no problems, the timing is even dead on with no jumps. engine has 280 something original miles(but the old odo said about 260, oversize tires). used 87 arco gas, and cruised about 70 the whole way. when i checked it yesterday when i filled up, got about 16.5 to the gallon around town. when i leave vegas tomorrow, ill keep track of the mpgs and let ya'll know tomorrow once i get into san diego.

This still would be better broken down by gens of 4Runners or trucks since the overall results mean nothing by just looking at the voting results and just way to many variables to consider w/o looking at all the replies which would take forever as this thread grows.

I have 206 miles on my odometer and have a little less than an 1/8th of a tank of gas, where I usually fill up, and I'm only getting like 13,14, or 15 mpg out of a tank, I drove about a 100 of those miles highway, and if I hadn't done that I would have gotten maybe 12mpg, I have 30" tires, and 2 1/4 inch exhaust, no cat, new plugs, plug wires, dist cap, rotor, rebuilt carb, clean k&n filter, everything is set perfectly, and I get asscrap milage, Do you think it could be the way I drive? I shift between 2500-3100 rpm most of the time and I get on it occasionally. Is this normal?! I get the fuel economy of a big block V8 and the horsepower of a stage coach...

Might be helpful if you tell us which of the trucks in your sig you are referring to.

I have a 91 4runner 22RE 5 Speed with stock wheels and tires 225/75-15. The truck is rated at 19 city, 21 freeway. The best I ever got when I first bought the truck was about 20.5. I decided to give MSD a try with their 6A ignition system. The best I ever got after install on a road trip was over 25mpg, driving 55-65mph. I'm very happy I installed an MSD set up, I average about 2-3 miles more now from stock with my average routine, Highway/City. Usually around 22mpg is what I get these day's. However I go through plugs faster and I use 91 Chevron. But the engine is more responsive and runs smoother too. I want to get 31x10.5's soon and I'm sure those will hurt my mpg.
